Bad news: Ball joints shot

Got the word on Friday. My ball joints are shot. When I bought the truck in March, the dealer - I should say the salesman - told me the ball joints had been checked and were fine. Well they weren't. I can only blame myself for not taking it to a shop and having things checked. I should have learned by now. I took it in for an alignment on Friday and the mechanic showed me almost 1/2" play in all four ball joints. Getting new ones put in tomorrow. Going with Moogs. Wanted to get Dynatracs, but couldn't find them. Everybody is backordered. Need them now.

I'll have all the seals and bearings checked, as well as the front axle U-joints. I expect I'll probably go ahead and have front brakes done as well.

Try to find some XRF ball joints. They are cheaper and get WAY better reviews than the moogs..

McQuay-Norris and XRF's are available from www.thetireclub.com. Either one would be a much better choice.

I'll talk to the shop in the morning. I think the Moogs have already been ordered, though. I have read the problems people have had with the Moogs, but I also think Moog sells about 10 times the number of ball joints as the next competitor, so a greater number of complaints is reasonable. There are also a number of posts showing a lot of happy miles on Moogs. I may need to change them again down the road a few miles if I have problems, but by then I won't be so pressed for time and can pick what ever I want. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the replies.

Ahhhh. Found what I wanted. KLM had Dynatracs in stock and will ship today. I'll get them on Wednesday. $599 and free shipping. Just in time to get the shop to install them on Thursday and get on my way on Saturday. Nice.

I would really stay away from the Moogs. You will regret it ! Your the customer you put in what you want, not what was ordered for you ! Don't do it ! JMO !

I can't say enough bad things about Moog! THEY SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't use them if they were the last MFG on earth! I would rather sell my Dodge and buy something else before I ever put on another Moog!!!!!

But.... just my 2 cents.

Down with moog! down with Moog!

Check my "Moog ball joint pictures" thread in this section.

I put some pictures of them taken apart and showing the ball.

Ok! I get it about the Moogs! I bought Dynatracs! They arrived this afternoon and get installed tomorrow. Thanks for the info. I was ready to just go with the Moogs, just because of my time crunch, but your posts on other threads convinced me it was a crap-shoot - some folks happy, some not so much. I was lucky enough to locate KLM on Monday morning on the Internet, who had the Dynatracs in stock. They shipped same day (actually got confirmation within about a couple hours) and they arrived this afternoon. $599 and free shipping. Most all the other dealers were back ordered.

I am impressed with the ball joints. They look like quality items. While they indicate they don't need lube, both uppers and lowers have zerks. The lower ball joints have a recessed zerk, so it doesn't get in the way. They also say they are rebuildable without having to press them out of the suspension.

I think I did well to wait and order them. I'll report back on their performance in a couple weeks. I have a 4500 mile trip starting Saturday.
