I have a miss when cold started as well...it goes away after a minute or so...

As copied as pasted from Cummins website:

Cummins Article on white smoke/misfire when cold

What causes white smoke?
White smoke is the result of incomplete combustion and is generally associated with engine start-up at low ambient temperatures. This condition is more predominant on high-horsepower fixed-injection-timing engines because the fuel and combustion systems are optimized for maximum performance and for reliability and durability under high load operating conditions. These engines can have two or three cylinders that misfire or have incomplete combustion when the engine is started at low ambient temperatures. The fuel that is injected into the cylinders that are misfiring is exhausted into the atmosphere as unburned hydrocarbons which cool, condense, and appear as white smoke. As the cylinder temperature and subsequently the coolant temperature rise, the misfiring cylinders begin to sustain combustion which decreases the hydrocarbon level in the exhaust, resulting in less white smoke being produced. Since white smoke is a normal characteristic of high-horsepower heavy-duty diesel engines during start-up at low ambient temperatures, it is extremely important to determine if the level of white smoke is significantly higher than normal for a particular engine model before making any attempt to correct a complaint. This can be accomplished by comparing the level of white smoke from one unit to another which has the same chassis configuration and engine model.
In other words unless it is missing all the time I wouldn't worry about it and chalk it up to Diesel and Cold weather.

DTE do you allready have over 100K mi.? If not then any and all injectors would be covered under the Cummins engine warranty.

DTE, Don't jump to any conclusions too soon. The 05 isn't fully broke in yet. I'm sure by the time it gets to 250,000 miles it will be a good towing truck also. ks

need to have a injector kill test done. Have to get the dealership to perform this as they are the only ones with the tool. It will narrow down which injector it is.

Unfortunately, the 8 hours it will take to run the test will cost him more than just buying a new set.

Where do you get the 8 hrs from. It takes no more than an hour to do it. With your truck turned off the tech comes out hooks up the scanner tool. Starts your truck, then checks for any codes. They then do a kill test at idle on the injectors one at a time. Once they do that to see what the efficiencies are at idle they will along with you go for a drive in your truck. They will then perform the kill test while driving. The bad injector can and will be isolated by this test. For when they kill the bad injector the knocking nosie will subdue and or completely go away. On their disply it should show the effeiciency of the cylinders.

No more then 1/2 hr if the tech knows how to use the scan tool but they will chareg an hour min.
Make sure that you go with them to identify the knock and if need be drive the truck as for when the knock occurs. Good luck and dont' be BS'd by the dealership or others.
