Auto trans advice

My 06 has almost 180,000 miles on it so I know my auto trans is on borrowed time. Should I go with one of the big name builders or just find a shop with a good reputation? I can buy a Jasper any experience with them? I would like to run my jr on tow without worrying. Also I use this truck daily for work & it will not be raced or abused. I want a trans that I can depend on. Thanks for any advice.

Unless your towing heavy and need a moded tranny, I would just find a good shop and rebuild it when the time comes. I assume its original with that many miles, something is right with it.

I had some tranny issues in 2009 with 43 K on the clock. It was a stretched band and a couple selinoids. Good to date at 84k on the clock. I installed a triple lock torque converter in 2010. When not in the tow haul mode it does shift up quick, especially when excelerating hard. In tow/haul it shifts like a race car tranny not towing. When towing in tow/haul I get off the fuel pedal at 55 and let it shift up to OD easily. Otherwise you think a shotgun went off in the truck bed.

On my dad's 05, I got him to install a Transgo shift kit and have it set on the firmest shift possible. It made a huge difference running empty and towing. And my dad is NOT easy on transmissions...

Once my trans started slipping, I looked for a performance trans shop. I think you can find a shop in your area to build with better parts than stock, for not much more than a stock trans re-build.

I just rebuilt, to a perfomance level, a 48re for guy.
He had it done TWICE by a local shop who has a good reputation and it still failed--TWICE.
He is only running a superchip.
The things I found done wrong or worse are incredible.

He is very happy now and it works great.
Some or most local shops don't know the weak points or just f them up.

This one had a snap ring--for the rear clutch-- groung down to get clearances close! It popped out of the grove!!!! The transgo kit had a spacer for the pressure regulator nor turned right also.

Be careful and get references.
I called this shop and was told by the rebuilder that those trans cannot hold the cummins, even stock for very long!!! He sais they need more clutches and it isn't possible.
Don't tell me that now because a dozen or more should of failed!!!

Thanks for the replies. I.m not hard on the trans but the few times I've pushed it it slips( even when it only had 50 or 60,000 miles.) If I hadn't found chunks of clutch in the oil the other day I wouldn't be so worried. I'm trying to get 200,000 out of it.

Any comments on a Jasper trans? I called them a week or so ago & the person I spoke to said they fixed the known problems on this trans. Price is in line & the appeal to me is that I would have it on the floor as I was taking mine out. That way I would only be down for a day or so. On the other hand if they aren't any good I don't want one. ???

I would be very cautious with a jasper.

I found the snap ring out of place because it was ground down to get clearance. I found the VB screws and bolts all over torqued.
i also see they did a transgo kit and the pressure regulator washer with a flat on it was turned wrong and bent.
