Approved Rear Diff fluid?

Re:Approved Rear Diff fluid?
Those aren't Mag Hytec's.
I agree, they sure do look good, but not sure the addl lube really adds that much reliability to the rear ends.
I've heard you need to put in 2 gallons of lube in the 11.5; so that addl cost for oil is substantial (using $$$ syn oil).

Yeah I should have mentioned that they aren't Mag Hytecs. They look like very quality pieces, but like you said before i'm not sure if i'm crazy about using RTV instead of a gasket. If I knew I could install it and forget about it, then I would probably do it. I just don't want any leaks down the road.
And you are right...synthetic oil is $$$$. The main benefit is having a drain plug so you don't have to keep pulling the cover every 15K miles.

Re:Approved Rear Diff fluid?
It is so easy to change the diff oil on our trucks as it is.
Since we don't have the drain plug, I just used my elec impact wrench, and spun them all loose and the cover just popped loose and all the oil dropped right into the pan. I used the wrench to spin them snug then used the torque wrench to finish it. Simple.

Re:Approved Rear Diff fluid?
The poster on the tdr either has a newer or older bottle of mobile 1 gear oil than i do. Mine saysMobil 1 synthetic gear lubricant is a race proven 100% synthetic product that outpeforms all conventional extreme pressure type gear lubricants. At the bottom it says it exceeds peformance requirements of GL-5 and mack GO-GS.

Re:Approved Rear Diff fluid?
Mobil 1 is a real Group 4 synthetic oil. I believe all the Redlines and most Amsoil's are too. Group 4's are synthetic through and through - the real deal.
There are other syn oils advertised as such, but are Group 3's, which means there is some dino oil in it. I think the Rotella syn oil is a group 3 as are many other brands out there. Some are called semi-synthetics.
Group 2's are the real dino oils.
Group 4's are the ones you probably want to use if your going for extended drain intervals.

Here's an interesting ongoing study of syn oil:

Using an LS1 Camaro, they just finished a 30k mile portion using M1, and are now going to begin with Amsoil.
