anyone put 24v in a 3rd gen truck?

The factory in Mexico put a 24V in my truck.....
I wouldn't say the 2nd gen 24v's are more reliable. Just because you read a few posts here about people having problems does not really mean the 3rd gens are not reliable. Back in 2002 there were just as many posts about VP44 trucks with problems as there are today with the CRs...

Before I would go to the trouble you could just P-Pump the CR motor. Get the best of both worlds. Injectors that would hold up for 300k+ and block that is a little better than the VP 24v and this CR head is supposed to flow a little better thant he VP 24v.
