Another P0148 code and related issues

My 06 has been very good to me with very little issues but lately I've had one that I'm beginning to take interest in. I'm completely stock with only a boost and egt gauge added. I have a 5.9 with a 6 speed manual on a 3500. 122k on the clock.

Last week on a road trip I got a P0148 code a few hours from the house with a few stumbles shortly after. I found a good place to pull off, cool off a few minutes, shut down, and got the code. Then I cranked it right back up and it ran fine. It continued to run fine for the remaining 4 hours down and the 6 hours home. The code cleared itself mid-trip. No issues till today. I go to leave for lunch and I get a hard start (2-3 seconds of cranking). Head home for an hour and another hard start to come back to work. Just went out a few minutes ago and another hard start. Hmmmmm...

So, all that to say I'm starting to do my homework and I figured I'd go ahead and post up something here. I see many threads out there but so many of them don't post up their results that fix it. Others just throw parts at it.

Per the manual...
1-OTHERS DTC'S PRESENT (none the last time I checked)
2-FUEL LEAKS (none that I can see)
3-FUEL CONTROL ACTUATOR
4-FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR
5-CASCADE OVERFLOW VALVE
6-CHECK VALVE DAMAGED OR BLOCKED
7-FUEL RETURN LINES OBSTRUCTION, DAMAGE, OR DEBRIS
8-LIFT PUMP FLOW
9-AIR IN FUEL SYSTEM
10-LEAKING FUEL INJECTORS OR HIGH PRESSURE CONNECTORS
11-PRESSURE LIMITING VALVE
12-HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP INTERMITTENT CONDITION

More as I find it out.

A side question... If I were to put in a fuel pressure gauge, would it be better to monitor the lower pressure lift pump or the higher pressure injector pump?

From another thread on this forum...

Vehicle Issue Hard start or no start. May have fault code P0148 , P0251.;Fuel is flowing freely through the Pressure Limiting Valve during the Fuel Pressure Override test and/or while cranking the engine (if the engine will not start).
System or Component Hard Start, Long Crank Time,Engine Cranks;14-003-06;Group 14 - Fuel System,Group 18 - Vehicle Performance / Driveability;Yes - Intermittent,Yes - Continuously;Fuel Pressure Low
Recommendation The Pressure Limiting Valve will need to be replaced. There is also an updated ECM which should also be replaced (unless the ECM had been replaced prior with part number 05191829AA / R5191829AA or newer) to prevent repeat PLV failures. The service kit for a revised ECM and a PLV is P/N 68003886AA

I would guess you have injector issue or leaking fuel tubes. You could pull the injectors and have them tested, or do a injector return flow test. I would recommend injector test since you may have more then one injector causing your issue. Test involves complete fuel system testing.

Make sure you have fuel supply to CP3 pump first but I would guess the Injector finally gave out, you can cap injectors at the fuel rail one by one until you find injector causing the no start. Problem is you need capping tool. Miller #9011.

take the fca out and clean it with brake cleaner, it should rattle if you shake it. the fca fails more often than the cascade valve. the rail pressure gauge is more important for your problem.

Fuel control actuator... that is the next thing on the list above. Is there anything I need to know about removing it? I see the part listed on Genos and they say it's located on the side of the high pressure fuel pump.

A great 4 part series on the basic workings of the common rail cummins. Part 4 has more detailed testing and diagnostics on the fuel system. The end of Part 3 covers some of the special tools needed.

Part 2:
Part 3:
