Another Opposite Question - Exhaust
Lots of talk about adding a high performance exhaust. Or simply an exhaust that's louder. Muffler delete, straight pipe, stacks, etc. Don't get me wrong, I really understand that. My little roadster sets off car alarms, and I love that.
But, I want to make my Cummins quieter. It's a 14 hour tow to Tooele, UT. I don't want to listen to a droning exhaust all the way across WY. I have satellite radio, and I'd like to hear it.
Two mufflers generally create so much resistance and back pressure that it hurts performance and kills mileage. Anything readily available that will keep the noise down without losing too much power? Liker a giant 4 foot muffler, about the size of a 40 gal garbage can?

If I understand you right you have stock exhaust and want to get rid of either the cat or muffler in an effort to make it quieter then now? Isn't going to happen, the exhaust is so quiet factory not much chance if any your going to get it any better. Not sure if you have a 5.9 or 6.7, but if 6.7 you don't want to mess with it at all, not worth the bother. If you really concerned about noise the best option is to soundproof your cab.

Ditto on the donaldson. If you keep your stock tubing you can go with the Donalson 51" m050944. Better flowing than stock, still sounds good outside the truck without the drone inside.

delete the cat and keep the factory muff...next quietest thing will be a 51" Donaldson with the baffle in. Flows better than factory but has no drone inside.
I am back to running the stock muffler...i have basically tried them all and there is no noticeable difference in mpg, power or EGT's from one exhaust the the other

X2. The factory exhaust is really quiet, and does flow fairly well. If you've got the 5.9, you can remove the cat for a little better flow, and it'll "clean-up" the exhaust note a little bit, making it sound less like a hair dryer and more like a man's engine, but you'll never make it any quieter than it is now. Dynomat is great stuff, and does a lot more than just quiet noise. It reduces rattles and keep the cab warm or cold depending on the season. If Dynomat looks a little more in-depth to install than you'd prefer, a couple cans of the spray-on sound deadener, primarily in the wheel wells and the inside of the doors will also return pretty good results.

That's about what I thought. I'v yet to see anything that says changing the exhasut imptroves power or mileage. Lots of people change the muffler for a differant/better sound. But, we like to talk and listen to music as we travel.
I guess I'll try and paint on some lizard skin.

That works marginally well for sound, but for the money the Dynamat is where it's at. It's a long full-day job, but well worth the effort. I put it under the carpet, behind the door panels and under the dash (with the left over pieces).
Well worth the time and effort.

I have dynomat over all interior surfaces,. This includes the doors and roof.
I have good tunes and I like to hear them as well. I put on a Donaldson 51" and it is near as quiet as stock. I did it for exhaust restriction because backpressure causes higher EGTs. The cat is still in place as it has little or no backpressure.
