When you have 2 and a quarter tons of wet topsoil in the bed, you can start in 2nd, but you can "feel" the life slipping off the clutch plates. Granny gear, on the other hand, goes "Pop, ooops I'm at the redline again".
I just wish someone would make an "affordable" overdrive transfer case. I guess you just can't have it both ways !!!!!

Yeah - I use 1st for breakaway too, since the normal load for my service trucks is @ 10K # GVW - but I'll start in 2nd for the occasional stoplight race I think the 315's really crutch the missing 7th gear

I have an 06 6 speed with 373's and am currently having a mitchell overdrive unit with 28.6 % overdrive rebuilt which will be going in as soon as it arrives. will drop my rpm from 2000 at 65 to 1500 at 65 : ) mitchell no longer makes this unit but they still carry all the parts and service them. they do have one used one left in stock which is a 35000 pound rated unit and can build it to any ratio you want.

supersonictoys, where can you get info on mitchell overdrive? I searched the web & could only find write-ups that had no contact info.

TIA

I just saw where the ZF manual for GM has a final ratio right between both NV and G. .76, and if I remember correctly that is Fords manual too. (Once again imagin that and 4.30's )

to be honest Tony , the mitchell wont realy work on a truck with a computerized automatic transmission. only good for sticks or pre heavily computerized autos. your tranny has speed sensors and is dirrectly conected to the computer and it will do you more harm than good. thats why mitchell stopped selling the units in 2000. there was never a problem with them and there are still thousands of them on the road, they just got tired of fighting with the computer system on modern automatic trucks and not enough people bought trucks with sticks to make it worth there while. More Torque

I got my torque managment issue solved, and now when I pull my trailer, (on level 2 or 3 on the edge juice, depending on how big the hills are), I have (dare I say it) too much power when I'm on level ground!?!?! I hit the hill at 70-75 mph and and only loose 1 to 2 mph going up the hill (with the trailer on!!! the waste tanks full, full propane tanks, and the wifee's costco haul in the unit, and of course my beer allowance hehe), and that is only if it is really steep. On level 3, I only hit 1100 degree and the odd time 1150 degrees (preturbo). I should be able to fix that with a 4 inch exhaust. It is unfortunate if you bought the unit with 4:10's unless you are towing heavier then me and doing so daily (I was contemplating a gear change to 4:10's until I found out how to get my unit to quit defueling for the bogus torque converter slippage), but even the 3.73's need a .5 OD gear when she's empty. (2:72's would be great if the speed limit was 100 mph ) I guess what i'm trying to say is, 3.73's can be used for everything, if you bump up the output with a couple of bombs. You don't really need a 6 speed (speaking of the auto's here fella's, no hate mail please) that is shifting all the time, when all she has to do is fire a little harder. Of course, if they ever build a true heavy duty continiously variable transmission I would be second, if not first, in line for it.
