There is nothing wrong with running the CJ oil in your 5.9, you just can't run it as long. I change every 5,000 so not going to use AMSOIL much longer because of the expense etc. I am going to stick with the valvoline Premium BLue every 5,000 and should be fine. Over on TDR there are guys who run the ROtella CJ oil 20,000 miles or more!

 

You would be fine to run that PB longer Roper- the oil can handle it. If you're using a Stratapore or equivalent you should be even more so.

The Fleetguard Stratapore oil filter's at Geno's for the 2003 up are $11.95 and the standard paper filter is $7.50. For the 98.5 to 2002 24V Fleetguard Stratapore they cost $9.95 and standard paper filter is $5.95. The 89-98 12V Microglass oil filters are $9.95

 

I would consider the AME just because summer is comin and maybe consider the HDD for winder, since it is 5/30.

Also, do your research on the bypass. I have heard if you run a dual bypass with the newer motors you have problems keeping oil pressure up and it is better to run a single bypass. Just my .02

 

So why get the stratapore which is a 25 micron filter when for a few bucks more you can get a 15 micron filter that lasts longer? Especially if your already running amsoil....

 

I've been running the 15W40 Marine grade for the last 32k or so.

I changed it every 6 or 7k. Probably a little overkill. I run K&N oil filters(believe Baldwin makes them). I like the 1" nut on the bottom. Makes life easy.

Make sure you go to Amsoil's website, get a preferred customer account for $20 a year and get everything for dealer cost. Best deal on synthetics.

Pour point on the 15w40 is -44 deg F.
Pour point on the 5w40 is -47 deg F
Pour point on the 5w30 is -58 deg F

Here in Montana, I've seen -30 to -35 a few times. Left a quart of Amsoil 15w40 outside just to see what it would do. Flowed easily. Seemed like room temp.

Left about a 1/2 gallon of Premium blue i had it flowed like ketchup.

Synthetic is the only way to go in cold climates.

 

Things are relative, and I'm respectfully stating my opinion about what you said here, but I have done the same with Amsoil AME 15W40 at -33 celsius and it sure did not flow like room temp...but it did flow, unlike regular. But that is why they have 5W40- for winter, and 15W40 for more "moderate" climates.
The biggest winner in the cold flow temp for my tests was Esso XD3 0W40. NOW THAT WAS FLOWIN' LIKE ROOM TEMP AT -33!!!!!!!!!!

Seemed to flow easily to me. I'm just looking at it move around in a big jug.

I was just stating that for people that worry about 15w40 for winter. Its not -30 here very often and that is cold compared to most places. I definitely would never worry about it unless I lived someplace really cold(like northern alaska, northern Canada). People on the east cost and mid west certainly don't have to worry about it.

 

I hear ya- it is very cold here during the winter...for almost three weeks straight in was in or around -30c overnight. One morning on my way to work it was -38, no joke, without the wind...ouch.
