Air Box Mod

I've been a member of the site for awhile now and this is my first post, but thanks in advance it's a great site with alot of useful information. Anyway, the question I have is, what is the perfered method of modifying the stock air box for better flow or is there one? Also, in doing this what are the risks of sucking moisture into the intake when driving in wet conditions?

For myself when I get a chance to do it I'll probably do something similar to this link below with alot cheaper parts.

I cut a 4" diameter hole in the bottom of the airbox and stuck a 4" drain pipe elbow through the hole.
Haven't seen any issue with moisture getting into the airbox driving through the heaviest downpours.

MikeyB, do you notice any increase in performance or MPG?

No gains in performance or MPG. But the filter minder doesn't pull down to 75% with a brand new filter during WOT runs anymore.

Seems like there was maybe a TSB out for the weak filter minder on the 2003models. I'm not a 100% sure on the TSB part but my first one would pull down quick. I remember having it changed out for the replacement minder which it has the stronger spring. The most the new minder I've ever seen it pull down is maybe 1/3 of the way if that much.

Tony,
You are correct. I did the airbox mod before the TSB came out.

There's been alot of talk on this. I've not heard any thing bad. I called DieselPower & asked about it. The guy I talked to said he sees the most benefit when towing with lower EGT's. He also said the tube was 3'' ID. So I walked Lowe's for an hour or so, But could not find any 3'' or 4'' flexible hose to my liking. So for $27.00 to my door I got this kit. Used 5 sheet metal screws to attach the hood onto the bottom of the air box.http://www.grizzly.com/products/g3181 About 45 minutes, 25 of them laying under the truck figuring out where to cut the hole. Real clean install. The tube lays over the finder liner in front of the tire. I cut the tube flush with the bottom of the liner. It will be the end of March before we make our 1st tow of the season. P.S. I stuck in a AMSOIL EAA189 while I had the box open.

I placed my order with Griz and its on the way.Question:My 06 has an opening and pipe coming from the grill,it draws fresh air from under the drivers side headlight.Would you cover this hole up ? If anything was going to suck water in this would,it draws air from the front of truck, where rain would be too.

Take a look at this for $140. I'm a little biased though.

the air intake sucks air from the passenger side...I assume that's what you meant
I would not worry about water ingestion unless you drive through water crossing our trucks sit up to high to worry about water, even a lite mist of water would not hurt it IMHO

Or you could do what I just did and put a fan on top of your filter. Creates a positive air flow to the turbo. Much better low end power, less turbo lag, boost doesn't drop off between shifts as much. Haven't had enough time to check MPG?
