AFE Stage 2 and Loss of power???

Installed my new AFE stage 2 with the PG-7 today. Sound is great but It seems that the turbo kick I used to feel as you accellerate is gone and I dont notice any surge of power at all.

I can here the spool up alot earlier that with my swiss cheesed stock box so, I was thinking maybe its just a more steady boost than what I had due to better air flow??? or is there a problem ,what do you think?

Also gonna do the Genos muff delete kit. Anybody done this at a round 70k? how hard is it gonna be to get the muff off and any tricks to doing so?

I just installed my AFE stage 2 a few weeks ago and from what I'm noticing its got more power from when I first depress the peddle all the way through the entire range till I get up to speed. On the stock box(no mods at all) I was not getting the turbo to spool up all that fast and it wasnt till I hit about 25mph till you really felt & heard the turbo start to kick in. So to answer the question yes I feel its more even power but more quickly.

Do you have gauges on your truck? if not get some, Fuel pressure gauge would probably be a good one to get for your truck year as another possible cause to your power loss (especially with 70k on the truck) could be a dieing lift pump.

As for the problem with the muffler replacement, heat is probably going to help alot. I replaced my cat with a delete pipe and as much as I wanted to keep that cat intact and be able to put it back on if needed once I got under the truck I just elected to cut the sucker off with a sawzall. whole job maybe took twenty minutes to complete.

If the intake as working as it should, you should have more air earlier in the RPM range, reducing the "kick" you used to feel when the turbo used to "light off." The power and boost should be more linear in their application. So, seat of the pants feel, it'll feel slower, but you're actually quicker.

It's funny, I've heard some of this same type of comment with the smarty on lower levels, since some of the other programmers hit hard in the upper RPMs, but smarty power tends to be more linear and sometimes feels slower, for the same, less kick in the pants, reason. Take it to the track, different story.

i read an article a little less than a year ago where some intakes actually decreased hp- i believe volant was one of them. they said the truck sounded better but the dyno doesn't lie.

im back to running a stock air filter set-up. minimal change in spool or egts. IMO a waste of money unless you want something flashy under the hood or turning numbers that the stock sytem isnt capable of suppling

use a sawzall for the muffler.

in the end, that may be the best answer but i sure like having the extra room without the stock airbox and it makes changing headlight bulbs a whole lot easier!

But Brett.......Don't you miss that whistle!!!!????

I think the AFE stage 2 makes the turbo sound like a jet engine. My first mod and no regrets!

Very interesting. My partner's 04.5 has a lot of turbo whistle as it spools up. Very noticable with a stock air box and factory filter. On the other hand, my 05 has a K&N with the replacement tube to the turbo. I can't hear a thing in my truck. I'm left wondering if the 05's had more sound deadener in the engine compartment.

Dont think so. I have an 05 and the AFE Stage II it certainly sounds like a jet engine. Paid alot of money for it so its staying, does it help, not sure. I had a drop in K&N before buying this, just going on the usumption that its great. I know what the one post means about talking in the cab. Right at highway speed is the worst too.

I wasn't impressed with my AFE stage II either. Lots of noise no extra power, but then again with my intake fan in the stock box with a stock filter or the amsoil drop in I have more HP at idle and all the way to peak HP. Intake fan cost 25$ plus instalation. I might try a AFE cone drop in though, because I could use my intake fan with that filter. Yes I have the AFE setting on a shelf in the garage.

so basically AFE are a waste of money? What is a good filter to drop in? or is stock the best?

What is a waste of money is adding a afe stage 2 with a PG7 filter on a stock fueled truck.
