About a quart too much oil...will it damage anything?
Just did an oil change and it looks like I put about a quart too much in. Not the first time I've changed oil, and I'm usually preety careful about that sort of thing..
anyways, should I try to drain a little off?

I would. Best way to prevent that in the future is to buy your oil in gallon containers. Dump in three of them and you're good to go. Also, when rechecking the oil level, do it after it's been sitting a while. It takes at least 15-30 minutes for all the oil to drain down to the pan. I check mine after it's been sitting overnight.

Seems to me in about 5000 miles your engine oil level should be nearly perfect! lol
If its only a quart I wouldn't sweat it too much. It will be a nasty job draining out a quart, as the flood gates open when you pull the drain plug.
Just as long as the level isn't much past the full mark.
The gallon idea mentioned above does work slick.

evrytime i dump in three gallons in ends up reading half way between the marks on the dipstick when checking after filling up the tank at the gas station. i know its supposed to sit alot longer but i dont have a level driveway at home so i can only check it when i fill up w/ fuel. besides, if it takes that long to drain back down it would seem to me that you would want the dipstick to read full after sitting only a couple minutes to keep the proper oil level while driving. im now adding 3 gallons + a half qt.

If your in the safe... your cool... I don't like seeing it over.... If it is a little over.. no biggy but if it is more than 1/2" then drain it down...
It is really not that messy... crack the plug and tilt it sideways like a valve...
I usually have a helper to see what the level is so I don't have to get up and then back down again... Wear latex gloves and clean up will be a snap.
Another tip... when you drain >>> count (in your head) and keep a consistent flow rate so if the checker say take out the same amount you know how much that is.
I case your wondering... I've had it happen to me a few times... comes with using a metered gun and getting distracted >> Usually by the customer.

I think you'll be ok, bud...not TOO excessive. If you feel the need to get that "peace of mind", you COULD drain a TAD, but unless you have a Fumoto Valve, you MIGHT end up draining more than you WANT! (Really comes out of these trucks FAST!) On a happier note...
I knew this guy that lived right up the road from me in high school. Didn't know a THING about vehicles and decided that he was going to change his own oil one day without asking ANYBODY with some experience. Well, this fella came to the conclusion that filling the oil until it is visible from the FILL HOLE was the best way to go ...oh and he DIDN'T change the filter...now ya'll tell me what ya think his engine bay looked like a few miles later?! LOL

Drain oil, remove filter. Reinstall pan plug.
Buy 3 one gallon jugs of diesel oil.
Pour some of the oil into the new filter and install.
Now pour the rest into the engine.
I dont even look at the dipstick.
