yea get rid of the 4:10's the new truck gets about 7 to 8 with loads that are stacked about 8 ft high on the trailer so we have a square front of about 64 sqft, trailer weighs 8k by itsself, and we run 70 to 75. these newer trucks do seem to get a little bit better mileage with a chip. the 03 does get better mileage towing then the 07 but i believes its because of the g56 tranny that doent let it get in the 2 grand sweet spot like it needs to be at 70.

What gears do you have? I have 4.10's and I don't have any issues at all with fuel mileage pulling heavy. My truck dosen't downshift either and always stays locked even if I lock out OD the TC will lock in 3rd. Hmmm?

Oh yeah, this has always been a common complaint with people pulling medium to heavy weight with 3.73's.

If I had a R48 auto I would go with 4.10 gears
I have a manual transmission and 3.73 gears running with 255/70/22.5 and I am getting the best milage ever when pulling.

With the 06 models do you tow with the tow/haul button enabled the whole time or just to start out and on hills?

That is because you have a manual 6 speed. With an auto it would be terrible. With a manual you get just about all of the torque. If you are lugging you can just downshift.

Hills were not even a little problem on tow/haul at the time and never searched gears like you described. My truck had about 10k miles then. I will assume you were using the tow/ haul and OD lockout correctly. What about the air & fuel fiters , I change the fuel every 15k and air when it looks dirty. The fancy thing for the air filter has never moved on mine. I have read where some folks lost their boost because of hose clamps comming off. What about your transmission level, is it ok? Your transmission could be slipping, have it checked out. Are you positive your trailer is pulling ok, brakes not dragging, axles not hot. Hope this gives you some places to look at.

I put it in Tow/Haul and leave it alone. I have the 3.73 rear end. The trans will unlock when it loses about 6mph on a hill, and that SOB will stay unlocked long after it hits cruise speed again, and for miles it will stay unlocked and running about 2300 rpm. The truck only has 5000 miles on it, I have syn in the diffs, dino in the engine, and haven't touched the fuel filter yet. Next week I'm putting 305's on it so this problem will get worse.

I'm thinking of a chip or tranny mod to fix this....

Tranny temps rise quick when it is unlocked. I have my Zilla Commander probe in the test port yet, but I have seen 173 degrees there.... I know it's higher than that at the fluid.

I think some type of trans chip or trans work is in the future.

7mpg pulling 10,000 lbs....
I know exactly what you are talking about. Mine does the same thing. I recently took a 5200 mile trip south to AZ and the mileage was as low as 7 mpg at times in the mountains and hills, especially when I encountered head winds. I even took it out of cruise control when approaching the hills and let the road speed drop to 50 mph or so to keep the tranny from unlocking. I don't know if that helped or not...............but I felt better.

The mileage on my '06 is not what I expected. Maybe I should have bought a 6-speed manual? (I didn't want do all that shifting around town).

Now this might be apples to oranges, but with my camper (full water, beer, food) loaded up and the trailer hooked up with 2 quads, 30 gallons race fuel, fire wood I'm weighing in at 12,800 lbs to 13,000 lbs; I'll get 12 to 13 mpg.

This past weekend when I went to Tulare with just the camper (no trailer) I got a solid 13.5 mpg. I weighed in at 9880 lbs when I started this past friday morning. And I might add, this trip was up the Cajon and Tehachapi Pass's
