68RE?
I thought I read some rumor last year at the TDR forums about Dodge working on a 68RE (6-Speed) automatic transmission. I have since seen no mention of it. Anyone out there have any juicy tid bits of info? Or was this all just wishfull thinking on someone's part? ???

New Venture's been given the assignment on that one, once they finish up the NV-7800 12 speed manual tranny with the two speed reverse. May be delayed, however, because the unit weighs 963 pounds, and they'll have to redesign the frame and front suspension.

Have you heard about 36 valve 5.9L Cummins diesel Jeep Wrangler?

....

Re:68RE?
Not sure what I said that would lead you to think I was joking, is a a 6 speed auto outrageous? ???

I think having two overdrive ratios would be sweet.

Re:68RE?
It's not outrageous. It's just that it took DC from 1989 to the 2003 model year to get their stuff together and "try" to make a decent auto. Now that it is here I think it will be around awhile because the other thing we don't think about is the cost to engineer and bring a new product to market. It's millions or sometimes even billions : The 48re will be around awhile ??? :

Put 200K with no problems on an auto and then u can call it decent, IMO. So who's got an '03 with 200k?

Luke said:
It's just that it took DC from 1989 to the 2003 model year to get their stuff together and "try" to make a decent auto.

No matter how good the 48re will turn out to be, DC does have to keep up with the competition. So if the competition beats on them with 6 spd truck transmissions beginning sometime in 2006, say, DC will probably come out with one. Good or bad.

GP

Re:68RE?
I am not saying the old 47's and the new 48re's are bad tranny's. What I am saying is after owning 5 D/A's and driving two new 6.0/torqueshifts, the Dodge auto tranny's leave a little to be desired

Re:68RE?
I do not know if Mopar is pursuing a 6 speed auto but the last issue of Motor Trend had a paragraph talking about Ford and GM in a joint venture to make a 6 speed auto.

Re:68RE?
Checked out the "sighting" and I am going to have to call B*** S*** on that story. Problem # 1 (as I see it) I really doubt that Mercedes has an auto that will bolt right up to the 5.9 (I don't think that the Germans are part of the adapt-a-kit crowd), I could be wrong but a 6 speed HD auto seems like a very narrow market nitch for Mercedes. Problem # 2 (same qualifier) Any auto manufacturer on the planet is likely to have a more sophisticated and stealthy testing procedure that distributing a 40 thousand dollar truck to "some rancher".
I've got a crisp new $20 bill that says what we have here is the proud owner of a new truck that is having difficulty distinguishing between a TC lockup and a gear shift.
I may have just gotten of the bus, but I've been downtown all day.

They had a computer behind the seat wired to the engine and trans. monitoring and storing info. They told us to beat the heck out of it and we did. We'd have it for six months to a year and they would come and swap it out for another.
