600 engine sound,...help

I'm not sure exactly when this started,...you know how it is when you drive something every day and all of a sudden you seem to notice something that you hadn't before. Well that's the case with this engine sound/noise. I would say it comes closest to sounding like maybe a lifter click on a gasser (not quite as metallic of a sound though) at idle and then you don't hear it after you get off idle. It's not an exhaust note or anything but rather an engine sound. Also I've notice on a cold start what seems to be a miss for a minute or two. And if I let her sit for say three days inbetween starts then when it starts there is quite a bit of smoke for a couple minutes and when driven regularly I notice no smoke. Are these connected? I was wondering if a injector stuck open would it make the sound,...cause and miss and also be responsible for the smoke? Or is this just normal and I've overlooked it previously. Thoughts??

I get a little rattling like engine pinging at idle but I believe that is from the 3rd injection event on our trucks. I do not have a lifter clicking noise...just regular old diesel clattering. Mine will smoke on start up to for a few seconds when it sits for a day or so...but nothing obnoxious.

Could be a sticking injector. Just a thought. Wouldn't be the first time.

I reported a similar noise right after I got my truck. Everyone said it's the "diesel ping" and all the 600s do it - don't worry. So, I blew it off. For me, it's most noticeable in a drive-thru or up against a block wall where the sound bounces back to you and you get to hear that lovely diesel clatter in all its glory.

Maybe it has done it all along and you just didn't notice before? Let us know what you find out.

Drop Keith at Forest City Diesel a PM and see if his does it. He may know something about it also since he has a new one.
His ad appears at the top of the page from time to time.

My standard output does that too at 36,000 miles. I worried about it and took it to the dealership. The mechanic said they'll all do it after a few thousand miles. He said if it get real bad he'd replace a fuel rail pressure sensor if I remember him correctly. But he said all is well. I've since trained myself to ignore it...

I have an 04, only clicking I hear is the lifters at cold start tiil the oil gets a little warm, then goes away. Is this what you may be hearing? If so, it's normal, solid lifters. Whats weird, Cummins says no adjustment til about 100K

No it's not different after it warms up on the noise. Does it all the time at idle only,....that's when I hear it. Now the smoke goes away after it warms for a couple minutes and I don't see that again until it sits for several days. Probably nothing to worry about but I'm gonna cover my a.. with DCX by taking it in and reporting it just in case.

I too have noticed since about 3500 miles at idle a clattering noise cold or hot but was told it's a diesel and that is what they do. I don't believe it is a "normal" diesel sound and am going to go in on monday aug 9, for my 7000mi. oil change and have the guys take a listen.

There are only two injection events. I checked it with an O scope awile back at work when all this talk of "multiple" events came up.

Yes, and I would definitely have them right it up so you have proof that you brought it to their attention just in case. I would swear I haven't always had this and definitely think it is a recent occurance and if so,...why now at 5900 miles and not before? Something is different and they just blow this stuff off and it pi......es me off. Mine goes in Monday but I'm gonna leave it tonight so it sits for several days before they start it. I want it to smoke for them.

Found the Problem,..Dealer just called

Several of you asked me to get back when I found out the problem and fix. The dealer just called me on this problem (see original post) and it is at least one bad injector. That's what I thought and that's what I told them. Too many things coming together at one time all indicating the same thing. It had never had any black/blue smoke and it never missed on start up till warm until recently. It may have been missing a bit at throttle but not enough that I noticed it. And that chuka chuka chuka sound at idle and when left in gear and just let it run at idle speed,..it never had that before either. I kind of wonder if this hasn't been somewhat of a building problem all along as my mileage has sucked like many others on this forum. The dealer called Star and they told them what they wanted to do to try and isolate the lifter/or lifters. Who knows,...maybe I'll get lucky and get a new set and perhaps even some good mileage too. Keep you posted. Sounded like they intended to have it for several more days though.

Yeah, keep us posted OT... I'd be interested to see if it makes a difference in your mileage. Being a diesel dummy, I can't differentiate between all of the sounds this thing makes, but it's definitely louder now @ 5300 miles with a distinguished clicking noise at idle... not sure if I have the same problem as you or if that is "normal". If the new injectors fix your mileage, I'll definitely be taking mine in.

I posted a sound clip on TDR of the knocking my truck started making recently. Sounds a lot like the injector knock described by others. Wonder if Cummins got a bad batch of injectors? Seems like a lot of people have brought up this problem lately.

CADan, just listened to your file - sounds like my 7.3 PSD, which had the famous "idle knock".

What is the build date on your engine? Now I'm going to be listening to mine more carefully.
