6 speeds!! Tell me if this is normal or not..
So im about to buy a 2004.5 2500 4x4 6 speed, first of all what trans in it? Ive heard of a g56 and an nv5600. And second it is hard to shift, I know these transmissions are truck transmissions and aren't gonna shift like a civic but sometimes its hard to get in to 1st or 2nd to start off and reverse. Sometimes ya gotta sit there and put in a different gear and try again.................the owner says it kinda got like that when he put a big dual disk in it................................anyways just seeing if this is normal.
Thanks

Its a nv5600. Mine dost not shift that good when the oil is old. Check to see if he installed the upgraded hydraulic slave cylinder with that clutch, if not you might think about one. Sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging all the way. And yes they shift SLOW.

Mine does it from time to time even with the upgraded hydraulics. It usually isn't bad but I'll have to let the truck roll a little bit before it drops into 2nd or shift into another gear first. I never start in 1st so I couldn't tell you about that.
I bought the truck with 79,000 and now have 282,000 on it and it's always acted the same. I wouldn't worry about it...

Rev is the worst on mine. Most of the time I have to hit the clutch and get it into rev while the countershaft is coasting down. Otherwise my clutch disengages so well, everything stops turning so fast and something doesn't want to move off center and let it go in. Make sure there is no grinding in rev. The first owner of mine wrecked the rev synchro hitting R instead of 5th. The trans rebuilder said the rev synchro isn't as good as the other forward gears - something about only having a single blocker. I've tried RP synchromax, dodge and amsoil and RP does the best and lasts the longest in mine for shift quality. Ams was the worst. I have to change long before the lube is shot and I might start looking for an additive when it gets to shifting stiff to extend the life. Craig

you can use other brands BUT it needs to be for the nv5600 or you will be asking for trouble.as for me I will only use the oil from Dodge I cant afford another $4000 rebuild .the NV5600 needs a special oil for it

Ma Mopar also has a shift enhanciing additive. Don't know what it is but if they offer to install when one has warranty then it probably is ok. Just another thought - no matter how cool you think it might be - never install a short throw shifter. The synchros will crash together if you shift too fast and after a while ..... (someone said it) $4500 for a rebuild.
