I agree here, but I'm very happy with mine. Sure, in town driving can be a PIA, but I can put up with it. As far as shakiness, I haven't experienced any yet, forward or reverse.

Have 6sp, have towed (gross combined wt) 30K - no problems. Have tow chip, so I think 6spd for heavier towing is best, and I am in Miami where the traffic (stop & go) is awful. I think my left leg is getting bigger than my right leg.....

Not gonna take a lose..... That won't happen, I will keep what I've got before that happens. Bought the truck used so I may make out O.K. Haven't decieded to look high and low for another used one or try to get new but I don't really want new. Prefer to find one with about 20,000 miles on it but they are like looking for a needle in a hay stack.

I like the G56 much better than the 49RE in my '98, especially since I installed "7th gear" and made the granny gear useful:

Besides, the zero-throttle launch is awesome!

I'm still a die-hard manual guy! I got my belly full of overheating autos with gas engines so I wasn't about to try an auto with a diesel. I did puter searches for months before I found my used 03 and it was worth the wait. Backing and tight spots are no problem with the 4.10 - which I also insisted on. But with all the good things I heard about the 48re/4.10 being another great workhorse, that would have been my second choice. A $2000 trans upgrade might be the way to go. I can't say for sure cuz I haven't had a 48re. My 6sp and clutch are smooth as silk! It's not fast in city traffic but it's the ultimate for towing and doesn't choke on the big ones ! I LOOOOOOVE my truck! Craig

Naw, these clutches are easy.
The clutches used on the Marmons and Macks I drove was a different story. Dang near had to stand on the pedal. Sure glad the clutch was only needed for launching the rig, and not while shifting.

I love my G56. Had a 5600 before this one and the G56 is alot smoother and the shifting pattern is alot smaller. I also love the placement of the reverse. It is a whole lot easier to get around with in tight spots. As far as pulling it is smooth as silk. Went 20000 stock and have been 20000 with a Quad race box and it hasn't come close to faltering yet. Tow about 10000 most of the time but have had up to 34000 on before. My father has a 2003 with a full built DTT and that is the only auto I would ever pull with, but he spent 5000 to get that. Go with the G56 you wont be sorry.

I have 35,000 miles on my G56 and have had no trouble what so ever. . . I love it! I will say that if I am backing up hill with a loaded trailer (8,000 lbs +) the clutch will shutter a little but not enough to worry about.
