5th to 6th ever so slight grind
Well the title bout explains my problem, very slight grind in my 05 2500 5.9 w/6spd stick. My buddy said it could be low on fluid , it has 125k on it now but there is no leakage anywhere on the tranny. Also I don t see a drain plug on the bottom of the tranny,so how would you change the oil in it?
The tranny is huge, don t look like something you want to remove in the driveway.Any insight on this would be greatly apprieciated. Charlie

Have you ever serviced the tranny in 125k? I was looking for a little info for you but came up short. I use a Pennzoil synthetic in mine. IIRC the last time I got it from Advance Auto, about $42 for the entire change.

My grind is at different rpm's. Being a manual tranny didn't know it needed serviceing like an auto. With 125k miles on it ,the grind only developed 3 or 4k ago.Guess I ll have to do more research. Thanks for the help. Charlie

If reverse is to the right and up it is a NV5600. If it is to the left and down it is a G-56 and uses ATF+4 fluid.
I am assuming you have the NV5600. The fluid change on the NV-5600 was supossed to have been done at 30k miles. I have changed mine at every 30k, which may be overkill, but I want the tranny to last.
You will need to remove the power take off plate that is on the driver side of the tranny. Remove the magnet in the bottom of the tranny and clean it. Clean up the mounting surface of the plate and tranny and use RTV silicon to reinstall. If you want to over fill the tranny as many do, leave out a top bolt, fill from the normal fill hole until full. Install the plug and put an extra qt. of fluid in the top bolt hole. You must use a syncromesh fluid, I use Penzoil Syncromesh.
The fill plug is a 17mm allen. You can make a tool from a short 17mm headed hex bolt and weld the nut on the bolt and use a box wrench to remove and install the plug.

rebal said it right. When the lower bolt is removed fluid will start to drain.
Once the cover is off there will only be a small amount of fluid in the tranny. I use a lint free cloth and clean the bottom of the tranny. An old 'T' shirt is lint free.

I didn't have good luck with Amsoil as far as smooth shifting. RP synchromax has been great. RP box lubes are a little tough to find. I might try Pennzoil next time just to see if it's any cheaper and/or more available. I agree... put in 6 qts. I haven't seen ANY downside to that - leakage, higher temp or anything else. Craig

Go to NAPA, AutoZone, O'Rielly's and any auto parts stores. I usually had to go to or 3 auto parts stores to get 6 qts. of Penzoil Syncromesh because they normally only have two or three in stock. I now start getting it bought ahead of time and stock up.

^^^ Same thing with RP (Royal Purple). Some napas, autozones and others sell it but might not have 6 qts. You could just have a napa store order 6 qts when you're ready and wait til they have the full order ready to pick up instead of running all over town. Craig

If you need any other odds and ends Advance Auto has an on line deal right now, 15% off $100 order plus $50 off your next $100 order. Just They'll ship it to you or you can pick it up in store.
