5.9 with a 68fre?

I know this has been asked before, seems like I seen a post anyways , just curious, nothing else, but seems like that would be a good combo if it could happen.

What would have to happen to make it a reality? (besides a chunk of money)

I would like to hear a little more about this as well. I thought about getting the 6.7 with the 68RE but did not want all the pollution stuff. I really would like to have the 6 speed for towing.

I have heard several times from different people that in 2007, at the end of the 5.9 the 48re was not available for the last 5.9's and the 68RE was put in. I can't confirm that and it might just be a rummor. I've heard its just a computer program that will make it work.

I can assure you that there were no 5.9's with the 68rfe tranny used. Completely different beasts/computers/ecms/software. I will tell you that the 6.7 deleted (even stock) and mated to the 68rfe is one towing monster and the engine brake is second to none. I had a 2000 5.9 with the auto (which I used to call the Antichrist, boy that truck was horrible), my dad has a 05 with the 5.9 and auto and I won't go back. The 5.9 is a fine motor, but the 6.7 deleted has been an amazing machine for me. I got my fuel economy back and the vgt turbo with integrated engine brake works so very well.

More food for thought... I've seen RV's advertised with Cummins ISB 5.9 engines mated to 6-speed Allison transmissions...

makes ya crazy huh...

I've seen them also. Most are still on the hwy. I've been looking in the RV Salvage places and have seen 5 speeds but no 6 speeds yet. Hook that thing up with a manual shift like some of the older freightliners have with the 250 hp Cats.

Actually, with a stock tranny controller it would not work, but with a stand alone its possible. Id call up Suncoast or ATS and talk with them about it. If they can swap the 48's behind the 6.7's with a stand alone, I would think that they may be able to go the other way.
