I know one tranny builder does not like the use of synthetics in his built autos simply because its too slick. Get it?

I am using a synthetic 5W40 in my truck right now and its -32 right now. When I do the next change its back to Dino 15W40 again.

Of all the trucks I have owned and put a lot of miles on, only the 01 had full synthetics. Did I benefit? Not sure. Did it help? Not sure. I was really believing it was the way to go but still do not have the proof of it being better. My first Ram had 430,000 miles on it with regular oil and no problems and it towed a heavy load most of its life. A few years back it had 780,000 on it with the same oils and was changed every 10,000 Kilometers, along with the fuel filter.

When my 01 had a 6 spd failure, the first thing DC ordered from the dealer was an oil analysis of the fluids. I had the stock stuff. I was told, no warranty had it been something else. Get this, I had the 'better' stuff on the shelf ready for the change out after that trip. Luckily I had not changed it out prior.

 

My wife got a 2004 Durango. The 545RFE transmission will receive Dodge ATF+4 on the recommended schedule to keep the 7 year/70,000 mile warranty. Cheap insurance premium.

After reading the post on the "other " board. It looks as though the guy used the "wrong" type of amsoil. He used one that was not o.k. by DC.

He spoke with the powers to be, & they agreed to let it slide & do it as warranty work.

There may be an oil o.k.' ed by DC, he just didn't use it. Did it cause the failure... beats me.

Iwill do all my own oil changes but Dodge can do the Auto trans because if they brake a band when they ajust them its there fix.

 

I didn't read the complete thread, only the 1st post. But from that post, the problem wasn't with a 48RE. It had to be a 47RE as it was on a '02 2500.

 

I treat my 48RE like an rtx...just got it back from the dealer today for it's belated 30k checkup.. Tech said oil in tranny looked good, not scorched, and no excessive metal or other material present. Replaced oil in diffs and xfer case as well. I let the dealer do all that stuff because if there's ever any question.......

 

It could even be a 47re in some of the early build 03's also.

 

As it turned out he did get the work done under warranty. He wrote a few letters explaining that this was his 5th Dodge vehicle and felt the fluid used had nothing to do with the problem.

They (DC) sent him a check.

And by the way, Chrysler did check to see if he was in fact a long time owner of Dodge vehicles.

Still not worth the aggravation of using a non-approved fluid
