48RE trans broke in half!!
#17
I had the same thing happen last night. I had a garage replace all 3 u-joints on rear shaft and first time I had it up to highway speed, heard a loud bang, instant bad vibration, looked in rear view mirror and saw tranny fluid all over. When i stopped and crawled under, housing was split and a cap was gone on front u-joint. I am thinking a clip wasnt put in right and when it blew the cap, the vibration snapped the case. Going back to garage this morning to have a chat. Wish me luck.
I just dropped my truck off at the tranny shop, Wish me luck to!!

Call Dodge today and found out that the extension housing is on "back order" until June. Only 2 units in the US available. Don't know what I'm going to do now. Called a local salvage yard and no luck Not ure If I want a salvage yard part in my truck anyway.
Any suggestions??

48RE broke in half
Went to garage where I had the u-joints replaced, he wanted truck towed there and would cover cost. After putting on hoist he told me he figured tranny failed and it was just coincidence it happened right after he replaced the joints.By the way it was the same front u-joint with a cap missing. It was the owner that did the work and said he was sure clip was in properly and it couldn't have been the cause. Must have been tranny O/D seaction failure that broke the case and caused cap to blow out, but if I wanted to have 2nd opinion feel free to get anyone else to look at it. I went and talked to tranny guy I know at local dodge dealership, he went and looked at it and said 100% sure cap come out and vibration split tranny housing. It is the O/D housing in front of the tourque converter. Either clip broke or not put in correctly, try to proove which one. Garage owner is being good so far, he called his insurance agent and we are waiting to hear from him. Hoping it will be covered by his insurance. Dodge mechanic said if cap goes it wont break TQ case on a diesel, tranny case is the weak spot. Has saw 3 in the last 10 years. Glad to have his expertise on my side. This doesn't help you though. Sorry. Will keep posted.

Trans shop called yesterday afternoon. Tech said that he has OD housing in the shop and looks like tranny is in good shape. Hw will be dropping pan and looking more closly today. May get off easy.
I talked with someone at Georand; they said that any small vibration in driveline may or may not have caused this. The crack could have been there for awhile and the change in u-joints may have "changed" harmonics of prior driveline. It could have changed it just enought to completely break the housing. I guess I'll never know. I will be getting driveshaft spun balanced to make sure everything is good. I don't want to have this happening again. Hope someone learns from my experiences.

Garage where i had u-joints replaced agreed to call his insurance company. Adjuster looked at it and appears to agree with me. It is now at dodge dealer and everything inside looks good so far, except for the housing part. Looking for a used one now. Also broke fan shroud when engine torqued or dropped a bit after tranny gave out. Dodge including a new driveshaft in quote. Waitng for insurance company to give go ahead. So far so good.

Well the housing that trans shop had was the wrong one. A used/new unit is no where to be found. Had to have a new one shipped from Iowa. Georand transmission makes the extension housings in house for there own trannys. Had it next day aired; hope It'll be there for Mon. morn.
Inside of my trans looks good as well. No other issues reported from tech. Hope to be back on thr road by Mon nite or Tues at latest. Looks like it'll run me about $1000 out of pocket.

Don't feel too bad. That happend to me in my 2003 dually which in that case was caused by a driveline vibration in the drive shaft as the dealer changed it out too. Mine was 2wd versus your 4wd but it can happen. New tail shaft and drive shaft and I did not have that problem anymore.

Stopped by tranny shop this morning. Found out that the extension housing was a factory unit. Don't know how they ended up having one, but they did. It was brand new. I was kind of disappointed that it was not a heavier built unit; my impression was that it was going to be.
Good news is it is finished. Driveshaft is spun balanced and complete. Will be picking it up in a little while.

Finally got her home. Not issues after 35 miles. Runs smooth with no vibes.
$1100 later. If it happens again...I am getting new BIGGER tranny.
I do have to say this....don't lie to people. While I was there picking the truck up, I asked the guy if he happened to check the fluid in the transfercase. It did not look to have lost any fluid, but I do remember some dripping out while it was hanging off the back. He told me to my face that he did.....wrong. I crawled under the truck and saw that there was no sign of a wrench being put on the plug. Dirt/debris was "sealed" around the threads. Just tell the truth people. If I would not have looked, I may have been driving around minus a quart of fluid in my t-case.
Tell the truth people, don't care who you are!!

That's the thing. I just had put new u-joints in the truck....then it broke. I hate the thought of causing this myself. Should I blame myself, or was it just bad luck??
