48re swap to nv5600 or g56?
Alright,
So i have a 2004 regular cab, long bed, 4x4 with the 48re. The trans. is in need of a rebuild or replacement. 165,000 miles on the truck.
NEVER race, sled pull or abuse. I do tow with it but just want to get the best possible mpg. I aways wanted this truck to be a manual but couldn't find one when i bought it.
I know it is alot of work to swap, but in relation to cost of rebuild and getting what i would like which is the best option nv5600 or g56?
What will i need? Can a 2wd 6 speed have a transfer case put on it to make it work?
If i'm looking for a trans, is it possible to have one from a different model? (ext cab short bed 4x4 , ext cab short bed 2wd, reg cab 2wd, etc).
I'm sure a built 48re would be fine but, I just want to know all of my options.
Is there many people who have done this on a 3rd gen?
Any thoughts?

It can be done your best bet would be to find a 4x4 transmission the coumputer will have to be reprogramed to change it to a manual set up. and then thier are the drive shaft issues. Best bet would be to find a donnor truck and set them side by side to be able to pull the parts you need and be able to look at how the pieces go on the truck.
I my oppion the g56 is a good trans but overdrive is a little to low needs to be higher and some people are having issues at higher horespower.
My .02
I would either get a built auto or trade for a stick shift.

It will cost way too much. Just get yours modded when it is being rebuilt upgrade everything. Get it done by one of the major tranny companies, not some shade tree guy. Do a search on here. DTT (?TRE diesel) , Garmon diesel in ATL, or Goerends are your best bet.

I have intentions of doing the same thing with my 06 mega cab in a few years. I just hope this auto lasts that long. Everyone says just trade it for a like truck with manual but why do that if you already own this truck and are capable of the work? Personaly I dont wana upgrade the trany and still not be happy with the way it operates. I realy hate this piece of crap trany and no amount of pollishing is gona make this terd of a trany shine any better. I had a 04 6 speed that I traded for this 06 auto and it was like taking a kick to the nuts for the power loss this auto sucks up. The 6 speed would tow circles around this auto.

To me its not really about how much power it will hold. In my opinion the manual is a better transmission and one that most people could pull and work on instead of having a specialist involved.
Way too much?
Compaired to what?
Built auto = $3000-$8000.
manual swap = $3000-$7000?
Lots of people want to see how fast they can get their trucks etc. Thats not for me.
I just want to make mine as efficient as possible and where i can work on most everything on the truck. Trading mine in is not an option. I know what has been done and how it has been taken care of. So with that being said, is it possible to take a 2wd tranny and put a tranfercase on the back to make it work, or do i have to find a 4x4 tranny?
