48RE and Exhaust Brake
I've just ordered a 2003 Ram3500 with the HO Cummins and 48RE tranny. This replaces my 2001 Ram
2500 with HO and 6 speed. The dealer has advised me that I can't order the dealer installed exhaust brake
with the auto tranny. This doesn't make sense to me since I would assume the exhaust brake is more
important on the auto than a manual. Has anyone got any info on this combo???

I'm in the same boat. It's my understanding (from other posts) that DC is still testing the e-brake and the 48RE combo. As of right now, they say it's a no-no. :'( :'(

Re:48RE and Exhaust Brake
Rumor has it that the approval will come about the end of March. I am holding off on ordering a PacBrake until after my '03 HO/48RE arrives sometime after the first of April.
Meanwhile, I gotta go peddle some more iron...need $$ to pay for the new truck!! ;D

Re:48RE and Exhaust Brake
Thanks for the feedback folks. R U guys saying that the issue is one of emissions?? My dealer tells me that the tranny doesn't have the necessary vaccuum lines to make the brake work!! I really don't think these dealers know what they're talking about. Kinda frustrating when they don't know their products.

Re:48RE and Exhaust Brake
Your dealer is wrong. And emissions have nothing to do with it. The ECM controls the brake and depending on the system you buy it is either equipped with a belt driven vacuum pump or an electric compressor. The necessary programming is already build in for an exhaust brake. The issue is transmission durability. DC wants to be sure the brake does not create durability issues for the transmission due to the stresses imposed by the exhaust brake. Hope that helps.

Casey

Re:48RE and Exhaust Brake
CHESTER, Just last week the dealer told me the same as they told you, kind of strange that they would have it in their brochures and don't mention it's not available for the 48re ?? I'm no help but I'm also waiting for some news on it. Can't wait to long got a rebate here in MICHIGAN ( $1500,00 ) end of FEB.

Re:48RE and Exhaust Brake
Thanks for the input Casey. I'm going back to my dealer with this info.

Has anyone tried one of the DC lowering kits for the 3500 4X4?? I pull a 5er and with this truck being 3" higher in the rear than my 01 2500 2 wheel drive, I concerned about getting the trailer level without starting to hit the box rails on the trailer undercarriage. I've been told DC has a lowering kit but don't know cost or how much it lowers the truck.
