48RE is Done!!! 385,400 Miles.

My transmission lost second gear this morning. Made it all these miles, but the unavoidable has arrived. I am looking for another factory transmission if anyone has any ideas on where to get one.

Do you think you may have had a falty second gear band that the friction material came unglued.

****, didn't make the 400K mark, boy do those 48RE's suck or what.

Makes you wonder how people bust them up so quickly, given all the chat on the site.

I would not look for another one, I'd just have that one rebuilt from better parts.

Agreed, I only got 200,000 miles out of my stocker and the rebuilder told me it was ready to bite the dust.......you did well.

I certainly would not replace it with another stocker... for less money you could get a built Trans and it would last you until you reach 1,000,000 miles.
The 48RE are good transmissions, but there are better/stronger internals availale. If you have to pay anyway, get the best and then you won't have to worry anymore. I have a full built Goerend, and it changed the truck to a much better one.
Good luck on the next 400,000 miles. How many injectors have you replaced?

Never replaced any injectors. Thought about it a couple times, but it is on the backburner. I am a BIG believer in "If it's not broken, Don't mess with it". I just posted a new thread. Going to convert it to a 6 speed to make it more interesting. Truck is retired now. Need a new project to keep busy. Got a state job this year.

Those are great miles out of a stocker. Please share on your driving and maintenance habits. Did you tow? How much freeway vs in-town? How often did you service it? Do you have an aftermarket pan? What type of fluid did you run syn or mopar? Thanks.

You are my new hero (OK, not really, John Wayne and Ronald Reagan still are my biggest heroes).

I have NEVER put that many miles on any of my vehicles, and I'm always impressed when someone puts nearly 400,000 miles on their truck, and ESPECIALLY getting that many miles out of a 48RE stock tranny. I purposefully avoided that tranny in my '05 and bought a 6-speed manual.

Wow lots of questions. I will try to answer them all. Truck has had a trailer on it for most of the miles. Mostly delivering campers. I pulled loads that were heavy enough to get nervous, but not many. It has had the Bully Dog on tow mode for most of its life. Fluid changed every 15k with mopar oil. For additives: I dump Muscle in everthing. http://www.fp10.com/ If you want more info on wear and tear keep the questions coming. I will answer all of them. Electrical has been the biggest pain in the #^%#$ lately. Salt got in my fuse box and fried it.

Oops forgot. I have no clue what 6 speed to buy. One that bolts up would be a good place to start. I think this site is the way to pre-plan.
