48re acting up?
things ive noticed over last 2 days
-kind of loud going into 2nd gear.
-tends to act like it doesnt know what gear to be in (switches back and forth at points)
-when i go about 30-35 let off gas to go back to idle then reapply the gas when the power kicks in the truck gerks forward.
what is going on i baby the heck out of this thing cuz ive heard the dodge transmissions arent that great :'(

Re:48re acting up?
My truck with the 48RE does not act like that at all. The only time I noticed some gear hunting was while pulling 10K up a long grade with OD on, it switched from OD to 3rd and back to OD and back to 3rd at this point I disabled the OD for the remainder of the grade.
Now I disable OD once it downshifts until the grades are over. It seems to work pretty well this way.

Re:48re acting up?
Well, this thing that I have has a sharp shift from 1st to 2nd when cold. When it warms up it is smooth if you accelerate at a good rate. If for some reason I have to get out of it the tranny doesn't know what I want so it shifts back. Also, if you take your foot out of it between 30 and 35 the TC will lock and this makes shifts somewhat sharp. I use the 3rd lock to keep the RPM down while the engine warms up. I can stay under 1500 up to about 55MPH using the pedal it trick. Try steady acceleration a few times and see how it goes then.

I hated to be "just another viewer" so, here's my opinion.
1. You shoulda gott a 6 speed.
2. More seriously- I'd take it in before it fails. It should not jerk at all! Take it in now and document the fact that you brought it in, its worth a lot toward warranty work in the future.
3. Hunting is very dangerous. It will mess it up BAD soon if you keep running it that way, especially towing. I hate Autos for just that reason, been through lots of trannies towing in the past.
4. 6 speeds never hunt and I like gear rowing!

Mine does the same thing. If it's right on the borderline of it's decision point it hunts. I either speed up or slow a little to put it over the line and the hunting stops.

Re:48re acting up?
Mine does it on occasion too. If you've ever driven an auto that is mated to a diesel, you'll find that they chatter and have all kinds of quirks. Allison is known for having an auto that clunks, chatter, shifts funny, etc., but is a solid tranny. If you're worried, take it to the dealer. If you wanted stability, you should have gotten the 6-speed as they shift the same all the time, sound the same all the time and are spook proof. The autos will spook ya until you get used to them IMO.

Re:48re acting up?
I had a 99 2500 CTD with 47RE. I hated the auto when pulling a trailer. Often it didn't know when to downshift. I went to an 01 2500 HO with 6sp. Really liked the manual but there are times when pulling the trailer that a manual just isn't that much fun. Now I have an 03 3500 HO with 48RE. This tranny is a big improvement over the 47RE. I've not had the shifting issues you speak of. I've said it in other threads....here it goes again. I liked the 6sp but I'll take the 48RE any day in pulling the trailer.

Re:48re acting up?
My new '03 with about 350 miles does not act like this. I get a little bit of TC shudder when I start to move, and the shifts are firm, and in some rare cases clunk, but it's never hunted or acted confused... quite the opposite in fact. This is the best-shifting transmission I've ever had in a truck.
As for "you shoulda gotten a six speed," well I just came FROM a 6-speed and I love the new transmission. I was sick to death of shifting and very, very tired of how poorly the NV-series transmissions shift. Mine was a bear to drive. I hated it. So I traded it and I love the new truck!
If you like the six speed, great! Me, I'll stick with my auto.

Re:48re acting up?
I hate and always hated that hunting that the trans is doing. My dad has an 02 3500 and its always doing it, mine is a little but not as bad. Ithought about bringing it to the dealer, they gotta be able to change shift points a little by plugging in right??? anyway doesn't fix your problem, just my complaint.

Re:48re acting up?
Mine shifts a little differently at times, always has, but never really 'jerks' and never, NEVER hunts, and I won't let it. I agree with XTOAC, If you're worried, take it to the dealer. If you wanted stability, you should have gotten the 6-speed as they shift the same all the time, sound the same all the time and are spook proof. The autos will spook ya until you get used to them. This is a good tranny.

Re:48re acting up?
Great choice, that is what I meant. Objective evidence showing you complained about the tranny worth a million bucks in a year or so when they have to do a rebuild, no co-payment or whining about the warranty or clutch costs if you say "well a year ago it seemed screwed up to me and you said it was JUST FINE, see this paper?"
As to the "shoulda gota 6 speed, I said I was kidding- you guys need a cyber beer- have one on me!!!!
