3rd gen's bad injector pump's

I have a buddy with an 04 with less than 30k, his injector pump went out last weekend. The local dealership told him that he was the 64th person that has had this problem, it was cover under the warrenty. They also informed him that there will probably have a recall on this issue.
Any one else have this problem?

There are several threads on here by member "Superduty" addressing the CP3 pumps being starved for fuel.

Apparently this is also aggravated by cold weather.

The long term solution is to install some sort of aftermarket fuel pump to keep the CP3 supplied with plenty of fuel, particularly if the truck is bombed with any horsepower upgrades.

I have had two CP3s replaced. Every Winter since I got the truck the pump begins to leak. The first pump was replaced December 2003. The replacement began leaking November 2004. The dealer would not replace it at that time because it would just seep and would take quite a while before a fuel drip would hit the ground. It bagan to leak profusely this past November and was replaced in December.

We now suspect the failure is related to the CP3 being starved by the lift pump and in turn causing the seals to fail. The seal failure is aggravated by the cold temperatures which causes contraction.

My truck is bone stock and is on the original lift pump. The lift pump was not checked when the last CP3 was replaced. If I had known then what I know now, I would have told the dealer to check the lift pump. It is just a matter of time until the CP3 starts to leak again. The next time I will insist they check the lift pump.

Ditto for me. Although, it was hard enough getting them to replace the CP3. I had to crawl under the truck and point out the drip to the tech before he would call STAR.

Yep! DC will try anything to get out of paying for warranty work.

I wouldn't bother checking it. Just replace it with an aftermarket pump and be done with it. That is next on my list.

Very popular misconception....

80% of my house was paid for doing warranty work folks...lol

warranty work is automatic money in the bank....

Heck, my shop will do warranty work, 12 hours a day...screw the customer pay...warranty is automatic payment, with a 40% markup!!!!

You all have fallen to rumors....BUT not AT ALL TRUE......

I realize that the dealers do not have a problem with doing warranty work and are paid well for doing so. My quote was in regards to DC proper, not the dealers. If DC the manufacturer can find a reason to deny a warranty claim, they will.

I asked my tech today if he checked my lift pump. He told me there is no reason to. If the lift pump were bad my truck wouldn't run at all. He said the newer trucks' injector pumps don't have enough pull to get fuel to the pump without the lift pump running. He also stated that since the 04's came out he has only done 2 injector pumps and mine was the second. He told me not to worry about it.

Mine died last week at 18K miles.

My lift pump went out all of a sudden last weekend. Got stranded. Roadside assistance and dealer took care of new lift pump. I guess they installed a new in-tank pump and implemented a TSB for the crank position sensor. For some reason or another, my mileage improved 25% - it's a mystery. I'm getting close to 20 mpg where I never got better than 14.5 highway. FYI, the dealer knows I have a quad xzt and said the lift pump failure was not caused by it in any way.
