replaced 47 RE @ 110,000 miles after melting tourque converter. It was time for a new tranny anyway, so I took it out to play one last time.

48RE has been replaced twice under warranty (Melted torque to shafte first time and the tourque converter broke up the second.) truck has 150,000 and tranny is getting ready to go again.

99,500 miles on my 03 3500 laramie srw with 47RE.
I pull an 11,000 (loaded) fifth-wheel in OD until the speed drops to 58-60mph,
then punch into third. Rpm's hit 2400 and I go on. MPG is variable: 8.5-13.2.
Unloaded 17.5-22 mpg running the interstates.
The truck is bone stock.
I woud like to know what a Smarty Jr. would do to/for the truck.

I'm curious about this also as my 03 is completely stock engine wise.

Bump

Four reported failures out of almost 40, and two of those failures (5% of the total) presumably under warranty. I think it's safe to say that the 47RE isn't so bad after all, and we can all quit disparaging it. I wonder what the score for the 48RE would be....

BTW, interesting how 40% of these trucks have less than 40k miles on them. That's roughly 10K miles/year. You guys need to get out and drive more!

Also interesting that 66% are still being carried on Chrysler's books as being on the 7/70 powertrain warranty.

Thanks for everyone's input!

I'm part of that 7/70 powertrain warranty myself,as far as getting out and driving more that high price of diesel put a end to that a while back. It's currently $3.359 plus a gallon around my neck of the woods.

The dodge auto is a good trans, just not as good as it could be from the factory. And it needs 1 or more gears!!!
Low line pressure kills it.
The bow tie boys are quick to say it is a bad trans. I guess they should know from the 700r4 years!!!
One dealer showed me a buletin from chevy that said the first two years 50% were rebuilt by 15,000 miles!!!!!!

A 4L60E is the exact same tranny as the 700r4 ones just shifted by a computer

This is a good poll to read. I`ve never had a 47RE but a friend has one that has been very good. When I told him they were prone to fail he just laughed & pointed to his 170,000 miles without a major problem. If my 06 trans holds up that good I`ll be happy.

It should do fine as long as you don't stick a lot of hp behind it or get it hot towing a real heavy load. I started out with in mind of a 30K planned trans fluid change on my 03. I had a 95 yr model Z71, that I bought new, it had the 700R4 trans in it, I know it had not been dogged,at 27K miles I lost the trans on it out of the blue,it just happens sometimes, it was still under warranty thank goodness. Any of the different makes can break down on you. I do have some friends though I believe could tear up a crowbar, if you give them half a chance, even without a lot of power behind it.

My '98 just turned 158k with no tranny problems. In fact, I just changed the fluid and everything inside looked great.

That being said, I'm still glad that my '03 has the 48re.

Before buying the Dodge new in my sig, I had a '96 Z71 5.7 auto with 85k on it. I roasted the tranny pulling a 5,000lb trailer up a slight grade on I-84 in S. Idaho on the way to Oregon for a family vacation. Not a fun way to start the vacation. I limped back home and bought a reman from the dealer for wholesale (must've felt sorry for me), for about $1600. He said I shouldn't have been pulling a "that heavy" of a trailer in OD . I dropped the old tranny down and lo-and-behold it has a REMAN tab on it! Two tranny's in 90k miles!!! I slapped it back together with the new tranny and put a for sale sign on it the next day and bought the Dodge. No regrets here!

(Oh, and then I had to have a bigger trailer becuase the CTD just ignored that panty-waist 5,000lb-er that did the Chebby in )
