3rd Gen 47RE getting a bad rap?
Just wondering. Seems like those who actually own one are satisfied with the 3rd gen 47RE tranny. Many who don't own one say they're junk.
If you've had serious problems (defined as "the sucker stranded me and I had to do more than just adjust the bands/flush the fluid/change the filter/get a flash to get it working properly again"), please post what issues you had and what it took to correct them.

I never had an issue with the one in my 99 V10. Had over 100k with just a few tranny services (drain/fill new filter). Probably 20K of those were towing my Jeep all over the Midwest/West/East.

18 to 1 so far. I realize this isn't a scientific poll, but I'll be sleeping easier at night knowing that the 47RE isn't a "pile of crap" as some have said (knock, knock). Hey...I might even turn up my EZ from level 2 to level 4! (just kidding)

Your 03 must be made in 01/02? My 03 SO is a 48re. Made in 03/03.
Maybe you can educate me on the 47re a little. From what i've heard they are prone to braking easier with a little power in front of them compared to the 48re. Is upgrading the 48re a little easier/inexpensive? I've never owned a truck w/ a 47re so i'm not knocking it, just curious.

The sticker on the door of my truck says "10/02", so it's early one.
I'm not a 47RE expert. It's easy to assume that a 48RE will hold up better to power mods, because Dodge never sold an HO with the 47RE. So yes, the 48RE has a higher torque rating and can hold up better to power mods. But as this poll is showing, in stock form or even maybe lightly modded it's not a "pile of crap".
I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't think the cost of upgrading a 47RE is any more than upgrading a 48RE (I'm sure the day will come when I'll need to find out first hand). BTW, Rhonda Kelly is putting 635hp and 1132ftlbs through her heavily modded 2nd Gen 47RE , so there IS hope.

My 47 lasted to 110k miles before the lockup on the converter gave out and and a thrust washer started to grind. Probably due to excessive heat and heavy throttle usage... The 47's in the 3rd gens have a upgraded valve body that makes them easer to tune than the 2nd gen ones. In then end if its a 47 or 48 with the stock converter, it wont hold up to power mods for very long
