Question 3rd Gen with 300,000 mi.

Hi guys Im a 1st Genner but have been looking at a 04 2wd Dually with a auto trans and the 5.9 cr. It has 300k on it and I guess my biggest question is the cr as reliable at this mileage as the old 12 valve?

Dean, I can answer your question. I have an 05 3500 4x4 dually 6spd. The truck has 275,000+ miles now. The only thing I have done is replaced 1 clutch @ 199k miles, and put a crank seal w/wear sleeve on the front and rear crankshaft and replaced some cheap gaskets. I had pulled my camshaft out and didn't have one scratch or nick on it. The injectors have never been replaced. The truck was bought new. In addition, I pull a 53' gooseneck in my business also. These trucks will last a long time if driven the way a diesel should be without all the power tunes. The Cummins engineers knew what they were doing when designing this motor. One last thing, empty I get 20 mpg @ 65mph. Hope this helps!

Honestly, if the truck is maintained properly it should last an easy 500k!!! My '03 has right at 300k on it and the only parts I've had to replace was the clutch and CP3. Factory injectors are still in it as well. Yes, I do have several aftermarket, power adding, goodies on it but maintenance is the key!!

X3 with the above. I'm at 328k now with everything stock....cp3 and injectors and even the batteries. I have replaced a couple water pumps and a couple lift pumps and 1 apps from Timbo. Had the trans done @ 220k and ball joints @ the same time and that about covers it. I don't pull anything much over 6k and she is really happy when working.....HTH

My '03 is at 218,000 and yesterday i changed the upper radiator hose and serpentine belt for the first time. on my second set of brakes and tires and rebuilt the trans at 140,000... still running strong and I'd have no problem buying another one with miles on it. Oh, I started getting great mileage after it passed the 70,000 mile mark. It still gets over 20 empty down the freeway with cruise control on.
Check the fluids, maybe do an oil analysis if you can and look over the maint records if there is any. You can tell a lot about a trucks future from it's past.

I also agree. As long as the truck was taken care of, you should not have a problem other than normal wear and tear.

The auto might need some work, ask if it has been rebuilt.
