Well I've seen some NASTY fliud come out of units with no ill effect.Mail carrier vehicles CHEZZ.Black as black and never a failure due to a flush.In fact have done flushs with WARNING NOT responable for anything on trans etc) on transmissions with morning sickness(won't engauge cold due to seals are hard etc)and been told that its much improved or kinda fixed.Got them by for another year or so etc.Best thing to come out for the consumer for trans longiveity.

I have to chime in on this "flushing" subject. I have a good friend that has a 91 GMC Z-71 truck with a small block 350 in it. He's had the truck since it was almost new. About a year and a half ago, he had around 150,000 mile on it. This truck has towed trailers with bobcats, cars, commercial generators and compressors, etc. He said he noticed at 150,000 mi, the trans didn't feel right. Brought it in to a local shop, also a friend, and had the pan dropped, new filter, and a complete flush. I was the one who reccomended he get the flush, expalining to him how it gets the whole system flushed. He said when he had it done, the garage completely stunk like burnt tranny fluid, and it was BLACK!! After all was done, he said he couldnt beleive the difference in the way his truck felt. Today he has over 200,000 miles on it, and still towing on occasion, and never a re-build yet. He swears that the trans flush was one of the best things hes ever done. I think my local AAMCO has an offer that if you purchase a lifetime flush contract on a vehicle, its $225 for the first flush, and they will do a complete flush once a year for $100 a pop for as long as you own the vehicle. Some people might not put the milage on to need a flush once a year, but still sounds like a good deal.

my dealers service manger which I do trust because I have been going there 15 years I know all of them small family buisness, small town. anyway he said d/c does not recommend full tranny flush they recommend against it . drop pan, clean everthing ,change filter ,refill. there price was 159.00

Never heard such from a D.C. dealer.The one I worked at and the one near my house use them daily and run specials on flushing.Why would THEY not want it done.To increase the amount of overhauls they do? Or sell more filters? Flushing also helps torque convertor shudder as it removes ALL the old fliud.

he claimed so not to flush junk around through tranny.they did mine cleaned ,filter, adjust bands ,refill. I did notice a better shifting and smoother .

It dosen't flush junk through the trans.Thats what filter is for.Any other junk gets flushed out with the old fliud.

This is the reason I like the flushes, alot of people think when they just drop the pan and dump all that fluid, it's good to go. A flush will flush out all the lines, external coolers, and most important, the converter. If you just drop the pan, there can be like 3-4 quarts still in the converter, cooler, and lines, so when your done, and you start it up, you mix all tha new, fluid you just paid for, with all the old fluid still laying in the other componenets. Its just like doing an oil change with out changing the filter. My Father always said, 5 quarts of new oil, with an old filter, will give you 5 quarts of dirty oil!! Same as a tranny, drop the pan, dump the oil, fill it up, and still have that fluid in all the other components, you'll soon to have a trans filled with dirty fluid again....

Dropping the pan and changing the filter leaves a LOT more then 5 qts in the trans.Lets backup and take the word FLUSH out of the scene.Its a FLUID EXCHANGE.Technically thats what the BG machines use for termonology.My 98 Dodge 1500 takes like 15 qts on a FLUID EXCHANGE.My Mercury Gran Marquis takes 13 or so and my old 93 W250 took 17 qts.We ran them at idle wheels lifted in reverse as it is higher pressure then drive.Watch the site glass and even fliud that looked somewhat ok on the dipstick looked at LOT worse in the site glass.As soon as it is NEW red fliud in site glass you shut it all down,unhook lines,test drive,top off if needed and thats it.Had 35 techs,two machines and used them so often we wore the fittings out on them a couple times a year.Never had a trans failure that wasn't already compromised to start with due to a FLIUD EXCHANGE.Never I ever saw or heard of in 4 years there.The Caddy dealer I was service manager at, same deal just less techs.

Hi, I just bought last Thursday an '03 2500 quad cab with the CTD and since it had just under 25,000 miles on it one of my request was a free transmission flush and filter change if that had not been done when the truck was traded in. I just got the flush done today and after driving home checked the fluid level. It was well above the full mark (hot and idling in park) at about 1/2 and inch above the S or U shaped bend in the dip stick. My question is should I drain some fluid out (the dip stick says not to over fill) or is it ok with the extra fluid. After I had the transmission in our old Ford Aerostar rebuilt the transmission shop said Ford wanted a few extra quarts of fluid in the transmissions to help keep them cool and they filled it up to several inches above the full mark on the dipstick. Is it the same with my 48RE or will the extra fluid damage something?

I think my 2004 dipstick says to check it idling in NEUTRAL not park. Check your dipstick again and the owner's manual.

Overfilling is bad.

It was raining in the morning but checked when I got home with the truck in neutral the level was about half an inch lower. It was in the middle of the S bend in the dip stick. I guess I will siphon some out with some plastic tubing and the turkey baster.

Leave it alone.It will vary with heat.A little overfull on D.C.autos is ok.In fact on the 47re theres memos to top off a little over filled etc.

With the truck in Park it is not pumping fluid through the Transmission cooler. You have to check them in neutral with emergency brake on. If you ever have your Tranny temp light come on don't stop and put it in park. Leave it in neutral. Only time I have heard of this issue is with heavy loads in the Mountains and not having the TC Locked up. You may have to downshift into 2nd so it will lock up the TC and the temps will come down. I wish the truck had a Lockup light.
