2100 rpm vibs getting bad

??? :'( well the vibration/drone is getting worse on my 03 ctd h.o. auto with 373s and 36k miles.....iv tried the angle iron on the exhaust,iv tried the id plate,iv looked over everying that has been discussed on all the different fourms....and most of us having these problems agree it is not (NOT) in the drive train...because it does it in neutral..and its an rpm issue not a mph one......the exhaust and ac and fan may play a roll but i think they only make the vib/drone more noticeable...this weekend i an going to pull off the belt and see if the vibration goes away...but i want have much time because of the obvious, COOLING,(for those of you that think i going to run my truck without cooling in mind)i have read that dc is working on it...but we all know that if the would put a team of mechanics on a truck with this problem they could find it in less than a day....face it they all the recorces at ther fingertips......this problem is getting old,and there are still no answers....ooooooo for those that will tell you that this is the norm for the ''powerfull ctd'',,,this is not my first ctd,its my 4th .......and this seems to be 2003 problem and this is a ((((((3rd gen. fourm))))))

Re:2100 rpm vibs getting bad

It is definetly a 2003 problem. My first 2003 did it. The new 2003, so far, has not. But give it a chance, it should start pretty soon.

One thing is for sure, many, many owners suffer from this and all are around the 2000 rpm area. Many months ago when I first said something about this problem, some wise acre on here said, well don't run at 2000 rpm. Hope his truck is vibrating apart. As for the rest of us suffering with this malady, I hope DC comes up with a TSB soon.

Re:2100 rpm vibs getting bad

Would be interesting to know the profile of the trucks that have a bad drone at 2100rpm issue. Like SO/HO, auto/5/6spd, 2500/3500, QC/RC, 4x2/4x4, SWB/LWB and dually.
When I first got my truck is had a noticable drone at 2100rpms, but now it's hardly noticable once the engine warms up.
cma1day, have you run any diesel fuel additive lately?

Re:2100 rpm vibs getting bad

I noticed this vibration on my truck to. I thought it was related to the .373 gears and me being use to the .355's on my '02.

After 6k and 2 months of driving it I still notice it but only at around 2000 RPMs. I do not notice it as much now. I am not sure if I am just use to it or if it is getting better. Never thought about running the engine at 2000 RPM's in neutral to see if its happening witout the truck moving. Might be a good thing to try.

If this is the only problem I have with my truck I can live with it. I do think that DC needs to take a hard look at it. Not all of them have it but to many of them do and DC should not ignore it.

THe 2003 I had with the dreaded VIBE, was a 6 sp and HO, My vibe went away instantly IF, I turned off the AC.

Anyone else notice this. Turn off the AC and no vibe. Turn it on and BAM vibe is back. Vibe is always around 2000RPM

Re:2100 rpm vibs getting bad

iv noticed that both auto and six shooters have the vibration...this way we can almost rule out torque converters and clutch components....but i think the vibration is there when the air is not on its just some of us have it so bad that we feel i even when the ac is off..i wonder if anyone from dc has read any of the fourms....when the dealerS told me they had never hrd of any problems i ask him to pull the fourms on both major sorces...of course they never did,,,o well keep trying

Well, I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the vibe with the new truck. So far so good. Only has about 500 miles on it, but the first 03 was vibrating away at 100 miles.

I have the vibration to. I hate it. we notice it the most because were in Louisiana. The a/c is on 9 10 months out the year. Its something to do with the engine or something on the pully system. This is how my truck is set up.At the bottom.

[/quote]Yes, but I'm running out of breath typing it...... I don't even notice it anymore, so it may be there or it may be gone.

Re:2100 rpm vibs getting bad

Ummmm....if a person were to have this "vibe" would they for sure know it?? I haven't noticed any vibrations on my truck (except for a very slight vibration in the dash occasionally), but it sounds like this is a common thing. I'm sitting at about 10,500 miles....and I don't think I have it. Is this a vibration where you'd know for sure it was there....or only if you were looking for it??

Re:2100 rpm vibs getting bad

I noticed it - felt like a high freq grind the first time I noticed it (thinking "what the heck?". It was disconcerting the first time; but like I said, its either diminished and/or I don't notice it anymore.

Re:2100 rpm vibs getting bad

Folks, this may be off base as I don't have the problem you have discribed. I know a man who had a vibe problem and found a resolution.

Met Sonny this summer while RVing. He had a vibration problem of some kind and had it services a few time with little improvement. Ran into him again 7-8 weeks later (small world). He had a dealer in Maine work on it. This guy installed a man sized damper on the drive shaft. This thing is about 10 inches in diameter and about 1.5 inches thick (if memory serves). It could have weighed 20 pounds. Sonny indicated it was a big improvement.

Sonny's ride is an 03 2500 Quad LB 4x4 with SO/48RE and .373.

Sonny indicated his problem was associated with the long bed trucks???

Again, I don't know if this relates to the problem you folks have identified, but with lack of any indication of any solution I thought I would share what I learned.

I hope you get thing smoothed out.
