2006 trans.?

I believe the 06's do have the 48RE. There is much debate about the 2007. Current rumor is that Dodge is testing out an Aisin 6sp auto for the 2007+ trucks to go along with the 6.7l ISB. Of course all rumors, and nothing substantiated. DCX is being VERY secretive about what they are working on.

The Aisin AW4 that Jeep used in the Cherokee was a great transmission. It was a perfect match for the 4.0L I6. The AW4 was very long lived and reliable in that application. I would be VERY happy to see a larger Aisin automatic transmission behind a Cummins - assuming the transmission was properly sized and matched for the load +50% to allow for chips and tuners

BigBlue, I'm willing to bet that Dodge is not one to lose the HP/TQ wards. The Cummins 5.9L is good to 425 hp (as seen in the marine version) with gobs of torque. The limiting factor isn't the engine, its the tranny.

I looked at a couple the other day and they had the 4spd auto tranny, they also have the tow/haul "and" the O.D. lock out. You can also get the Jacobs exhaust break on the 2006 auto tranny. Specs for the EB are on the cummins.com web site.

DC is looking at the MB/Freightliner 6 speed auto that come with a pacbarake. The already use it in the Sport chassis setup on the Cummins. I guess they need to get the electronics right before making it standard.

Well guys I was at my Choachman travel trailer dealer the other day, They had two small motorhomes on dodge dual wheel chassis, with Mercadies Benns diesels in them. Now thats getting close, when you realize the contract between Dodge and Cummins runs out in 2007.
Yes the 2006 have the 4 speed 48re and as already mentioned it has tow haul AND overdrive lockout.
To make a long story short, The 48 is a good strong trans now ,with the desired features,Tow haul , 4th lockout, and exhaust brake compatable , And the cummins has been out in present configuration for a while, I'm thinking 2006 is a good year to buy. Dont know as I want a Mercadies Bens, or a new upgraded cummins, or a new untryed 6 speed trans.
I pull a 35 foot Holliday Rambler 12000lb, with my 98.5 no problem at all, for 114,000 so far , in overdrive on level going . Downshift as needed. Towed through the rockies ,some 10% grades for 15 miles up,( 2nd gear there). This truck has the 47re trans , which is much inferior to the 48re. Never had a problem with the 47re. Never really needed 5 or 6 speeds. Only thing more power allows you is more speed, ( pull that 10% grade in 3rd instead of 2nd, and go 85 instead of 65 on freeway.)
IMO these engineers better wake up. Ten years ago when we had 160 HP cummins in the Dodge, bragging rites layed in the HP corner, not so anymore!! With the price of fuel today Braggin rites lay in the econamy and dependability corner.
