2006 Ram 2500
Alright guys, I looked through the forums and couldn't find a lot of feedback so here is a new post. What are the thoughts of the auto trans in the 06 2500 or 3500 CTD Rams? I currently have an '03 with the 6 speed and love it, but with all incentives and such that is being offered I am considering trading in for a new one. If I do so I am leaning towards an auto for the convenience factor, so any thoughts on reliability of the auto? Or any other info or insight you might have.

Here comes the fire Baby !!!!!!! I for 1 can not stand the 48re Trans! I have had nothing but bad luck with automatic transmissions since they were even though of in my mind! The truck that you have right now is going to get better MPG's, and will last forever as long as it is taken care of. Yes I own an 06 but if my Brother would not have crashed my 03 I would not have had to sell my 01 HO 6spd that I loved oh so much. The new trucks are great in everything they do. The ride is way better, they are quieter, and the power is amazing compared to the earlier 03 04 models. If the dealer will give you what you want for your truck then I say go for it BUT PLEASE do yourself a favor and drive the new G56 to see what you think.
It all depends on what you need the truck for really! Towing heavy get the 6spd- - - - - - -Just driving around looking cool in your CTD, get the auto. Tired of driving the stick buy the auto to then realize 3 months later just how boring the auto is to drive!!!! All just my honest opinion tho!

Well I had an 02 CTD and the reason I got rid of it was the auto. I nuked 1 and was well on my way to tearing up the 2nd. I have heard that the new ones are great. Got lots of buddies who farm and haul hay and cattle with an auto and say they have zero problems. One question about the G56 is that a getrag. If so I assume they have gotten better than the ones in the early 90 CTD's?

Well I just got back from the dealership and we couldn't work a deal. They would not give me a fair dollar for my truck. The reason being I am eligible for the Supplier Discount that chrysler offers to their vendors. So because that is a fixed price the dealer was not making any money on the new truck and they wanted to make up their "loss" on my trade. I guess now I don't have to make the decision if I want an auto or not. Thanks again for the input guys.

The G56 is a Mercadies- - -(spelling?)- - - -tranny that has been in use in heavier applications overseas for a couple of years now. Go and drive one and you will see the improvment over the nv5600 in shifting quality and the fun to drive factor with 610lbft of TQ at your heels is great

I have the G56 trans, just picked it up almost a month ago. Regarding your trade - I drove 800 miles to pick up my 06 2500. May seem like a long way to go to get what you want but 1) there aren't too many G56's out there (there were precisely 3 in the country with the configuration I wanted and the 2 closest were 50 miles away from each other so i figured if I had a bad experience w/ one I'd go to the other), and 2) I was able to get $3,500 MORE for my trade than I could up in my neck of the woods. Different markets, different values.
So choice was, drive 800 miles or wait for an 07.5 or probably an 08 to see how the 6.7 worked out, order an 07 (order a 5.9 that would arrive weeks before the 6.7? nah) or just sit on the truck I had. 1600 miles round trip for $3500 more on trade made it easy.
Point being, shop around. Up here it's easy to get $100 over invoice on any truck but getting good $ for a gas trade isn't likely esp. because all of those incentives we're seeing all over the place are essentially just lowering the resale value of our previous or current vehicles.

I have had my "06 w/ auto for about 3,000 miles and have had no problems at all. I dont tow 15,000 lbs with it, but it has had no issues with what I haul and tow. Its also much easier to drive in heavy traffic.
