Reason - per Dodge the trans front bearing will not get enough oil/lubrication at idle. Extended idle running time at the higher RPM will cause the front bearing to fail

Question: How does this work? Isn't the oil pump constantly circulating on a manual transmission? If the front bearing doesn't get enough lubrication at idle, then it's conceivable to say it won't get enough lubrication when your in gear and driving.

Someone is fibbing to you. If this is the case, leave the truck in the garage and never start it ever....the front trans bearing will never get enough lubrication.

Now the Dodge autos are a completely different animal - they don't circulate oil in park.

I don't know for sure. Someone will have to chime in, in the know. I thought there was an oil cooler up front, so there would have to be a pump of some kind. Maybe a combination of both cooler and bath??

Either way, the front bearing thing is off the rocker - there are lots of guys running PTO's and subsequently high idle kits on these trucks everyday and all day in the oilfield.

This I know, but I thought they were putting one on the manuals as well. Or am I thinking something aftermarket? It' so hard to keep track of all of this stuff!

The manuals do not have a pump in the transmission at least the pre G56's. The gear oil clings to the gears and climbs. When it's not in gear and not moving the fluid can not cling and climb for proper lubrication. That is how the front bearing can be deprived of lubricating fluid and disintigrate. The reason they do not bath all the gears in fluid is for anti-foaming reasons. When the pto is being used the transfer case is in neutral and the gears in the transmission are turning causing fluid to lub all parts.

Funny!! Then why does DC have a kit to put on the 6 speeds? Somebody is blowing smoke again.

You have to keep the 48re in N if you do prolonged idling. You will do damage in P...
The 48RE circulates enough flud in park for lubrication. It would be kinda sillyto build something that blatantly screwed up, don't you think?

How do some of these stories get started?

Automatic high idle is 1000 rpm's on the trucks that have this enabled in the ECU. It is dependent on intake air temp and throttle position. The manual high idle is 1100 at initial set then increments of 100 up to 1500 in neutral or park.

On a manual transmission, the PTO pin in the ECU B connector needs to be grounded AND the high idle enabled in the ECU. The kit that DC and Cummins have adds a brake switch for disengagement like the brake. The wire for the PTO pin can be purchased seperately. Either find a dealer that isn't an idiot or buy a DLer that will let you do it.
