have you tried to grab the steering shaft in the engine compartment and see if it moves? if it does i would take it to the dealer and have them replace.

yes i actually did they said that is normal play....keep in mind im a cop not a mechanic....some of what they are telling me i wouldnt know the differance...i am convinced it is between the steering box and the steering column...it could be the intermediate shaft.???

Your simptoms are the same as mine. It started lightly at 20kmi or so. Now at 30kmi it's so bad I can here it. When the tech pushed on mine like I described in my thread, you could hear it clunking just like it did in the truck.

Mine is getting replaced soon. I will let you know if it solves the problem.

I am also having the same problem.Took the truck to dodge and they said it is all do to my tires being slightly cupped.Im pretty sure that isnt 100% what im feeling in my brake pedal and steering wheel. My problem also started at around 18,000 miles and is increasingly getting worse, but my cupped tires where switched to the rear and the tires on now are fine.I think im gonna have to make another appointment with dodge and try to get this problem solved.Keep me updated if anyone finds the solution.

go figure the temp dropped 20 degrees here in maryland drove the truck over 40 miles today and never felt the rattle.....i have been told that the intermediate shaft has a fiber sleeve around it...my thoery is that the fiber has shrunk causing the rattle to disapate....im lost now.....

I have also noticed that when the truck is cold, it doesn't rattle as much. After I have been on the road and the truck is up to temp, the rattle is back. This morning is the coldest it has been in a while and I didn't feel it either...

... but I dropped it off at the dealer to have the shaft replaced today. I will be driving a lot this weekend. I will let you know if the problem is gone. I think it will be.

Got the truck back this afternoon.

CONFIRMED! The rattle/clunk is gone! I actually enjoy driving the truck again!

To be clear, the steering shaft should have near 0 play in it. The tech told me after putting in the new one, it was obvious. Then he showed me under the hood. Near no movement... and no clunking.

Get the steering shaft replaced and don't let them tell you slop is normal!

just a suggestion

i'm not sure if this will fix it but it was the answer when i experienced what your talking about

try checking the track bar and 4 link bars for tightness my upper drivers side link was loose and when i tightened it it got a little bit better but then i was told that the track bar has to be super tight so even though it didn't really feel loose i tightened the heck out of it and problem solved

Thank you. I've been dealing with an increasingly worse squeak/rattle coming from the area; I just tried pulling on it today and there's definitely some play, feels like at least a millimeter or more. I'll get to the dealer.
