2005 passenger tierod seperated ball from socket

Was in 4x4 and had to turn had to the left, heard a big pop and then I had trouble steering it. Get out and look, and the steering linkage on passenger side hanging down. The ball end popped right out of the socket. Never seen this before, kind of scary, wondering if I was going the hiway if this could happen.

Ball and socket look good, no cracks, fractures, or excessive wore noted, and it won't fit back in(not that it should, meaning its still tight?

What's up? 172 000 miles on chassis. Thanks
