2005 Owners Any Problems
#16
I cant comment much right now. My attorney is waiting for the figure on the buy back. I love the 2003 truck I bought, I just dont like the vibration that came with it. I'm taking Dodge to court to force them to either fix my problem or buy it back, they have a choice. I would own another Dodge no problem as long as it dosent have any vibration problems. I understand Dodges business position here. Its cheaper to satisfy the few who file suite than to have a mass recall. I'm just forcing their hand. In the last week I have driven the GMC, Ford and Chevy diesels and I get back in my Dodge and like it better than the others till I get up to the vibration speed on the highway. Without the vibration I think the Dodge is # 1 for my situation.

I attributed it to new motor, and winter grade fuels. (the dealership said it was fine)
After the 037 TSB, it seemed to have gone away for me.

Well lets see. I have had mine for 2 months and 10,000 miles, and about 5000 miles of that is towing a 7000# toy hauler. First things first. It did not vibrate when I got it but at about 6000 miles I thought I could feel a slight vibe starting at 70 mph/2000 rpm. Now at 10000 miles the vibe is now noticeable and I have the aluminum drive shaft. Secondly, I have so many rattles in the cab behind the dash that when the dealer chases one down and fixes it, another starts shortly thereafter, and thats why I bought XM radio, the rattles still drive me nuts though. Also there is a design flaw in the front door seals. When you open the front doors the sheet metal ahead of lower part of the window digs into the seal and starts to tear it. I am on my third set of door seals. They just put same seals in everytime and replace my chewed up ones. The dealer tells me that DC is designing a fix but somehow I doubt it. Anyways, I can live with the rattles and door seals but the vibe is bothering me. No one seems to know how to fix it. The 48 RE seems ok for now but it throws a P1740 code about once a week then clears itself. The tranny is great for empty driving but I sure wish there was a gear between OD and 3rd, then it would be perfect for pulling a light load, say under 10,000#. Pulling a steep grade of 7% or so OD is too high so it downshifts to 3rd and winds up to 2500 rpm at 60 mph and kills your mileage not to mention being very loud in the cab. I feel that a gear that would keep me at 2000 to 2200 rpm at 60 mph would be ideal. Just my opinion. All that said this truck pulls like nobodys business. One final thought. DC better watch out for the GM Dmax. The Ally is great for pulling and the Isuzu engine is getting the bugs worked out of it. My buddy has an 05 that I have driven and pulled with on a few occasions. The GM cab has no rattles, is much quieter inside, and just feels like its put together better. The truck drives like a dream and has a very comfortable ride which is great for those long trips. Sometimes on long trips with my hard hitting Dodge I have to pull over and stretch out my back and give my body a break from the vibrations and rough ride. When I was in the market for a truck the Dodge and the GM were the only ones in the running and now that I have had a chance to do a bit of driving and pulling with both I think I would buy the GM if I could do it over. The drivetrain vibe and poor ride figures heavily into my feelings on the matter. Vince

Loving mine. No problems and 8,000 miles. Used to have the '98 Ram V10- great truck, great power, lousy mileage - 6 towing, 10 hwy. With my new Cummins I have seen close to 25 mpg on extended hwy trips and close to 20 mpg towing, 15-16 around town. Awesome torque.

I love mine has 6300 on it no vibes had the vibes on my 03 but it went away afther we put a rivet on each corner of the id tag and tied the steering hose the only thing I like the 03 better was the fuel mileage got 23 on the highway with it and this one is 18 of course we had a box and exhaust and cold air on it maybe this one will get better afther we do it up!

I have 4500 miles on my '05 2500 . I am noticing a couple of problems with mine . One is the dreaded 2000rpm vibration/roaring . Seems to be getting worse . Taking it in to the dealer Friday so we will see what happens . Also seems to have some shifting problems around 30 - 40 mph when driving around town . It feels like the transmission doesnt want to shift and I have to let off the accelerator to get it to shift right . And I am hearing a "whining" noise in the rear end around 40 mph . I only hear it when I let off the gas . While driving at 40 mph I can take my foot off the gas and let it "coast" and thats when I hear the whine . Anybody else having any of these problems ??

and I have to let off the accelerator to get it to shift right
?
I hope you're not speed/power shifting all the time. That'll cause a prob for sure
Make sure you write down your problems yourself and not just let the dealer write it up how they see it.
Sounds like rear axle whine to me.

I've got that " whine " as well when i let off the gas but it only started after i got done pulling #7000 for a few hundred miles . Now it does it all the time , loaded or unloaded Is it normal or something i should keep an eye on ?

Keep an eye on it. When you do your next diff fluid change, clean off the gear and look closely at the contact pattern from the pinion gear meshing with the ring gear. I recommend photographing if possible too.

I now own a 05 3500 crew cab dually AT 610 cummins.
I traded in a 96' V10 AT dually club cab. I live in central VA and choose to go I64 to Beckley WV when pulling my 40ft enclosed all alluminum gooseneck car hauller. There is a 5 mile pull at 7% called Sandstone Mountain. The V10 when realatively new before taking it to the dealer for a computer flash would pull this mountain starting at 70 toping at 65 with cruise set at 70 pulling a Haulmark 32ft gooseneck that had a steel frame and triple axles trailers weighed about the same. Before trading in V10 it was pulling most mountains just fine passsing everything but the gas station geting 5-7 towing and 10-15 empty. Sandstone however with new trailer was killing it we were topping the mountain at 45MPH. I liked the looks of new truck and they no longer make the V10 truck engine so I bought the deisel. The 05 doesn't spin the tires at the stomp of the pedal but it ran pretty good and gets 16.5 when calculated but the computer shows 18. Well I towed out to Indy and back this weekend. 560 miles each way and couldn't make the trip with a 100 gallon auxillary tank without having to stop at Beckley WV for fuel. The computer showed 10.2 MPG the hole trip but when calculated the truck only got 9 MPG. I had to put 70 gallons in the auxilary and 28 in the stock tank and went 904 miles. I was told before buying truck I could expect 12 from some and others claimed 16 towing. I only have 2,300 miles on truck and will start to tune it up now because I didn't spend 30G to slow down. I have been told for 9 years how much better the deisel was than the V10 now I know the truth going 55 MPH the deisel is better it will maintain 55 without going into 2nd gear on extreme hills so it doesn't make you nervous and I hope to get less tickets for running 70 in 55 zones like I did with V10 because that's where it liked to run. But as far as the interstate I'm not really impressed with the towing capabilities of this 610 deisel. I gained 3 mpg and no power for what I need the truck for. If I can find what makes these trucks lay down after pulling just fine 2/3 the way up Sandstone all to give up on the last third I hope I can overcome the lack of go.
Hope this helps you in making your decision. Also the way the rear springs are set up sucks if the truck can't stay on or off the overload springs it will beat you to death every time it bounces off and back on them the old truck road like a dream when towing this one does not when on rough roads.

I'm picking up my new 05 next week. If on the test I get this 65 to 75mph drone and vibrations should I take the truck or turn it down? Is it that big a deal to fix. I heard some trucks have the vibs and some don't. What would you do?
Oh, its a 05 dually 6sd.

Rod, there is not a cure for the 70 mph vibration. You might be ok because the vibe and drone is felt mostly in Crew Cab 4x4 automatic short bed trucks. I have driven three different 05 Dodge diesel trucks, all 2500 crew cab 4x4 short beds. They are all smoother and quieter than my 03 at 70 mph but I can tell they still have the drone. I'm afraid it could turn into a vibration. I have driven a Ford a GMC and a Chevy all CC SB 4x4 trucks and none of them vibrate or have a drone at any speeds. As much as I like this Dodge truck, I dont believe I will be getting another one. If I do it will be a Hemi, they dont vibrate or have the drone. Good luck with yours and take it on a long test drive and if it vibrates or has a drone. Dont sign or take delivery for it till they fix it to your satisfaction.
