Exclamation 2005, oil consumption question

I have 170xxx miles on this truck, as far as I know it is all stock, I bought it with 164xxx miles on it in November 2012. 3,000 miles ago I changed all filters, (oil, fuel, air, & crankcase filter in valve cover) filled with Rotella and drove. I have added 1 gallon of oil since the oil change. No noticable leaks, turbo is dry on both sides....no hard start or run issues. It does "black" smoke on acceleration. Any ideas on what I should check?

Sorry for posting in wrong section yesterday.

it sounds like the previous owner ran it with a aftermarket air cleaner, probably a K&N. the black smoke is from extra fueling. I will bet the cat is missing and it is either chipped, programed and/or bigger injectors. there is nothing short of a overhaul to fix the oil use. I have seen some engines that had K&N filters in them that had the same oil use you have then changed back to stock with new buyer and ran for 2 to 3 hundred thousand more miles, the oil use does not get a lot worse.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to change oil brands for what its worth. Then I'll have a compression test done to see if that shows anything.

Can say it has stock airbox, and exhaust on it. As for injectors, can't tell you. Same for a tuner, not one left in truck when I got it at dealership, but that means nothing. Dodge dealer in town says they will update programming for an hour of labor and that would take out a tuner if one was left in it.

the drop in K&N was the worst one of all of them. post back after the program update. crawl under the fender and see if the turbo has a solenoid on it. this will tell you if it is a stock he351cw. the pix shows where to look, this one was removed and turned into a boost elbow. the next pix shows the turbo with solenoid
