2005 cummins 4x4 w nv5600 hard shifting
I have 52000 miles on my 2005 cummins 4x4 6spd nv5600. I have been having a hard time getting it in gear at like a stop light. 1st and 2cnd. I thought replacing the clutch would help.. needed the new clutch for my smarty box and afe and such. Anyone else experience problems like that?? I had a 2001 with the nv5600 and loved it. loved my 97 with the nv 4500 in it too. Any suggestions???

It seems the later NV5600s often don't shift that well. Mine can be tough to get into gear after idling in neutral, and a friend of mine's 03 does the exact same thing.
I don't believe the clutch is dragging. Switching to MTL seemed to help a bit.

when I changed my clutch I changed the fluid but I just put mopar nv3500 fluid in it from the ***********. only was able to put 4quarts in. then I put the check plug in and put another half a quart in. I filled it through the shifter hole since I had it out. noticed some brass looking particles up around my shifter in some oily residue.

I bought an `04 with 50k miles on it w/ the nv5600 trans and I think it shifts smoothly-LONG throws yea!-but shifts great. I`m a toyota guy so my dodge/diesel knowledge is limited......but I know nv5600 is a real truck transmission-not a mall cruiser trans by anymeans. Mine won`t go into first until I`m just about stopped, and makes noise if you start off too easy in 2nd and really could care less about that kinda stuff. Syncro problems are really my only concern with a manual, grinding & popping.

I Have The Same Problem Mine Was Smooth More So in the earlier miles And Then Has Progressively Gotten A Little Tougher To Get Into 1st And 2nd. Dont Get Me Wronge It Was Always A Little Stiff Even For The Previous Owner But Now Its Gotten To The Point Of Down Right Hard Into 1st Or Second About Every Third stop and then engage When You Let It Idle .
Redline MTL Did Not Help, A Hydraulic Clutch assembly May Give Me A Little More Travel And Clutch Disengagement And Or An Ofe may be in order but Beyond That At 50k Miles Its A Mystery To Me Still. The Other Four Gears Are Fairly Smooth (never any scratch) But Then Im A Slow Shifter These Days, as it is im an advocate of the nv5600 i got over 400k towing out of my last original as well as 175k on one with twins in a 98 12v they work great neither ever developed syncro problems nor shifting problems like this one.
FYI slid tranny back and the input/ pilot bearing is fine as well disk has lots of material left and has no missing fingers. innards of tranny has no metal shavings, i have two extra large magnets inside now just in car to see if anything pops up.

After idling in neutral sounds like a clutch, pilot bearing or some sort of release problem but not a trans issue. If the clutch is fully diengauged then the trans is fully disengauged. But if ANY grab for several reasons then getting into 1st or reverse would /should be difficult. Just my old school thoughts on it.

I am on my 3rd nv 5600 in 28000 miles and not happy about it. My first one shifted hard in 2nd and 5th, then the rear main input bearing completely blew apart and finished the tranny. My second on (2500 miles on it) whistles and jumps out of 2nd bad, and can barley shift it into reverse or 2nd so they said they would tear down that one and see what is wrong, probably need a new one as well. The good news is that the vibration I had for the first 25000 miles is gone. Along with the tranny I had an intercooler 3 injectors and need 3 more I have the white smoke and rattle on start up going on. I am starting to wonder if I should trade but can hardly justify with such low mileage. Sorry about the rant just letting you know about the tranny probs.

well my clutch a pilot are fine. hydraulics are said to be by dodge. truck is stilll a pain to try to get moving quick from lights. its like the tranny is telling me no dont wax the powerchokes butt you'll hurt his feelings so it wont let me shift so I have to blow by the powerchoke after letting him get me off the line for a few gears

wish there was a simple solution and a new truck isnt going to be a solution. this thing may get the grandpa treatment. towing rims(rickson) muffled exhaust with turndown. ditch the smarty for a van aaken 3.2 and a 3.1 if they stack and a campershell. then no more feeling like its danged hot rod or something.. lol.... innerchild has to comeout sometimes.

I added 2 extra litres of Mopar fluid through the top PTO bolt hole. Made the trans shift a lot easier (especially into 5th), and quieted the whirring noise in 6th quite a bit. gear
