Question 2005 2500 CTD 6 Speed Manual Driveline Clunking

Help! My truck is back at Dodge for the 3rd time today. At about 8,000 miles I started developing a loud clunking when getting on and off the throttle. I am just under 20,000 miles now and the problem is louder than ever. I have taken 3 rides with 3 different techs and all have said they never heard a noise like this. When asking about the issues the last 2 times I have been told there is no bulletin out for this issue and it is normal. I have driven trucks for many years and this is not "normal". How can I get this properly diagnosed and resolved? I tried a different dealership and was told their diesel tech quit and they could not even look at the truck. I contacted Dodge directly and they told me to bring it in to the same dealership again so they could look at it. How can they tell me there is no issue when the tech identifies it during the test ride? If there is no bulletin out for it then it does not exist? I can't have a bad yoke or spline or mount something in the driveline without a bulletin being out? It seems nuts to me that Dodge thinks they could know about every problem out there before it happens and generate a bulletin for it. I love my truck and do not want anything else but I also don't want a 45K problem for the next 10 years. Any ideas out there?

I say it's your slip yoke, I have had this same problem for the last 20,000+ miles.

Slip Yoke?

Is this something that can be replaced or is it a design issue? I am under full warranty.

It does sound like something in the driveshaft area or maybe even a rearend issue. Hard to say I haven't heard it.

The last time it was in I was told they had applied some type of lube to the yoke and it did go away for a short time.

Do you have the NV or the G56?

The G56. I got the truck back tonight with the same response as before. Can't find anything wrong, this is normal for a 6 spd manual. Any other 2005 6 spd manual owners out there that have loud clunking while getting on and off throttle??

I have the g56, no noise hear, Is your truck stock height? Sounds like a binding slip yoke, or maybe youve got something loose on the suspension

Standard everything except the airbox. I want to drive another one to see what the story is but I can not find another Standard anywhere around. All automatics out here unfortunately. If I am driving slowly and tap the throttle repeatedly it bangs away like crazy. The tech yesterday said it could be the clutch springs but I am not touching the clutch. It is very aggravating.

He means the springs in the friction disk might be broken, that would give to about a 1/2inch of play to slam back and forth.

This happened to me last year. I found a bottle of windshield washer fluid rolling around in the back..... OK I should know better than making joke, especially one that's not funny.

Taking driveline noise/clunk problems to a dealer is the most frustrating thing I've done. First its the tires, then its the road, then is the diff but its in spec so live with it, then they don't have a clue and hope you go away. Took about 6 trips to get my dakota's U joint repaired, that was 5 trips after I told them its the U joint and it took a division rep to look at it. It took about 10 trips including a factory rep to get my 85 Vette repaired.... unfortunately its not a ailment limited to dodge.

is it only at low speeds or does it do it when running down the freeway as well? if Im idling around my yard with a good load on the truck and I push in the clutch I get a kind of "clack clack clack" when the load is removed from the motor . mine makes no noise when at speed. it only does it when I'm crawling and there is resistance against the drivetrain and then the resistance is released suddenly.

It happens at any speed. The clutch never even comes into play. I can be in 5th gear doing 45 and when I step on the throttle I get a clunk from what sounds to be the passenger footwell. Same thing when I let off the throttle just not as loud. If it did this from Day one I would be inclined to agree that it was inherent to the truck. It started around 8,000 miles or so. I will locate another one eventually and test drive it to see if it does the same thing. The dealership is nice but they really have no clue.

I get a clunk under similar conditions. For example, backing into a parking space that is slightly uphill. I back up with my foot off the clutch, and when I am as far back as I want to go I let off the clutch and I get a bang/clunk that sounds like it is coming from the rear of the truck. Same if I am using 4WD going forward through deep snow and then push the clutch in. I'll have to have my SM check it at the next oil change. Definately does not sound or feel "normal". It's been doing it since new.

Mine does this. It's done it from day one though. Especially doing the reverse uphill thing. I've heard it's just backlash in the drivetrain. It's most prominent at low speeds in low gear.
