2004 long crank times

have a 04 3500 srw 6 spd 4wd that has long crank times. doesnt matter if it hot cold or warm but it is worse when hot and low on fuel. we reprogramed the ecm as per tsb # 18-033-04, the most current tsb for hard start cold/hot. coustomer said it started happening after he got some dirty fuel. any thoughts or ideas???? injectors? transfer pump?

need to check fuel pressures at the rail and from lp. sounds like it is bleeding back either thru the injectors or pressure valve. pressure at the rail at crank should b about 5500 or moreing

Do you have any white smoke? Any sputtering problems while at red lights or idling? Any kind of surging?

Because I had these issues and while I thought it was injectors turned out it was my FCA (fuel control actuator) I replaced that ($114 from Cummins) and everything has been great since...

at idle it has a slight miss no white smoke ever alot of black for a stock truck but it does have a large exhaust leak which is most likely the excessive black smoke cause

slight miss sounds like injectors along with the black smoke exhaust leak shouldnt cause black smoke. 12valvedutchy, best way is to spend a little$ and get a fuel pressure gauge, i thought the edge attitude had something on it to read rail pressure. 03,s reall seem to like to eat injectors when chipped or at least mine did went thru 2 sets

Rich- checked things out today and my injectors are good but my in tank pump doesnt look good. Do u know if i can put a mechanical guage on top of the fuel filter cap with the pressure port from Genos Gargage or is it only for electronic guages. Thanks

thats where i ran my fuel pressure gauge on my 03 make sure you put a schader valve to prevent all the fuel and pressure going to the gauge because last i knew it will kill it

Well black smoke no matter exhaust leak or not is rich, where is the exhaust leak is it on the manifold cause really thats the only place to cause a concern (besides of course the smell going into the truck itself)

I dont know enough about injectors but from what I have read this doesnt sound like an injector problem, however I could be wrong??

You could always try just pulling out the FCA and cleaning it up and seeing if it helps, mine was so bad though that I couldnt even move mine so I knew it was bad...

the leak is at the cyliderhead and exhaust manifold and between the turbo and manifold how can that not cause black smoke low boost from loseing exhaust gasses it takes expelled gasses to make boost you got an exhast leak not goin to make as much boost yeah i know it computer controlled and a map sensor should compensate for it but my old truck had a leak in the same spots and it lost boost and created more smoke then when sealed up .

Hate it for you.You could call an F1 dealer and ask what you would be looking at to let Don go through them.Lloyd Mills with Mid Atlantic Diesel is great to deal with(240-818-2973)
