Question 2003.5 - 250/460 vs. 305/555 lb

Did I read correctly somewhere that mechanically the Standard Output 250/460 and the 305/555 HO are the same? And that the difference was made up through computer changes?

If it makes any difference, I found a 2003.5 with the 250/460 engine AND a 48RE! I was considering future upgrades if the need arises and wondered if the dealer could make the change. (Unless it would void the warrenty - IF they could do it at all.) If I get the truck.

Would appreciate any input.
Thanks,

They're not identical. Look at #29:

If you get a good deal, I wouldn't hesitate a moment to buy the truck.

Cummins has offered uprate kits in the past for the P7100 in the 12v and programming in the 24v. Maybe an uprate kit for the ISBe is in the works??? The uprate kit from Cummins is expensive but Cummins and DC both approve and it doesn't void your warranty. Just depends on how bad you want to keep the factory warranty. For hot-rodding, you can bump up the power on the 460 and be pretty safe to an extent. For towing heavy, I prefer to leave it stock. Things can heat up pretty quick. Just my humble $.02.

Cool

Thanks.
I have an open race car trailer w/big tool box and fully loaded bed now and plan to tow a 26' Pace eventually. I've seen some mild upgrades suggest a mileage increase to boot and that has been my main interest. That would be max if ever needed and 4.10's could be an option. Hopefully anything more wouldn't be required especially since it will take a while to recover from the purchase, if I get it, regardless of how good a deal it is.

If you don't care if you're the fastest truck in town then you might like the 250/460. You can see what I've done to mine and I pulled a meager 299hp/554tq on the dyno w/ the EZ on level 4 and a Magnaflow muffler. Yesterday I did a move job with my enclosed trailer and I bet I was at about 12,000 lbs gross trailer weight once it was loaded. My truck pulled it so easily it was ridiculous! I even kept my EZ on level 5 and EGTs never made it above 1000 degrees. An HO is nice in that it gives you a headstart but the SO can be made to be almost as strong.......

Exclamation

Reliability and fuel mileage are my biggest concerns for towing a race car trailer. What's on the trailer is how I get my "fast-fix". But I like to have somewhat of a bigger than average margin of capacity also while not sacrificing reliability. So I appreciate all the options outlined if I find it feasible to upgrade in the future.

I can tell you that my current truck, when it was brand new and stock, had more power than the 98 24v that I traded in on it and the 98 had an EZ box on it. These newer trucks will tow anything but do a little work to them and it is almost a joke when you put 7 or 8000lbs behind them.

It won't say HO, but if you look at the rectangular white sticker on the valve cover, it will give it's rated power @ 2xxx RPM. 325 HP @ 2900 RPM for example.

Ya Jewell. I was happy w/ the hp number but not so w/ the tq number. There was a HO there w/ an EZ and his hp was the same but his tq was way higher than mine......
