#2 Rod Bearing damage
Went to see the truck today, they are waiting for gaskets. They believe it will be done for the weekend. I sure hope so. I took a few more pictures if anyone is interested.

Actually they are replacing the short block new crankshaft, I remember that much. I did not specifically ask about what else would be new. They warranty the motor for 100k ,they have to do it right. It's got to last another 87k to get there. The block came in late Friday. I understand they are keeping the head. All the other stuff like the turbo will get bolted on the new block.

Almost two weeks ago was pulling my boat to Madison WI. Within a few miles went from a light ticking noise to a banging noise. Had it towed to the dealer. Turns out to be the #2 piston rod bearing went out. It's unusual ,only 12,877 miles on it. Never used oil and all gauges at the time, normal. They did ask me about oil changes, that has been regular and done by the dealership. The truck was just starting to get broke in too. Darn it!

The 1st change was @4k at a dealership in Belvidere, I was not impressed with them. but the last 2 changes 7.5k &10k were done at the dealer that is currently working on the truck. The oil they use is from US oil bulk. If I remember it was Valvoline premium blue. I decided (before I bought the truck) to have the dealer do all the service so there is a record.

The truck will be ready Monday. They may have it ready Saturday but want to make sure all is right. According to my service guy I should put on at least 500 miles before towing. I thought that break in period was for the drivetrain. He just said that if it was HIS truck, 500 to 1000 miles to seat the rings & stuff would be a good idea. I will be able to get to 700 miles before my LaCrosse boating trip. This site has a lot of experienced people, is this true.

I think if you go to the Cummins web page, they suggest working the engine right off the bat to seat rings and allow it to break in, so the general consensus is that the no towing for 500 miles is for the transmission, and expecially the ring and pinion.
On the other hand, the dealer who told you to put on some miles first is also probably the dealer you would rely on to help you if there was another problem (say they got a chunk of old gasket down into one of the oil passages, or whatever).
Bottom line: I think their suggestion about waiting to tow is bogus, but I'd hate to have to get the truck towed back with 30 more miles on the odo hooked to a 10,000 boat after they told you to wait to tow...
