2 micron stock filter for ISB ?
This is a note about the introduction of the 24V ISB from the Cummins Quickserve website. The date of the document is Jan 1, 1998.
It seems to say that there is a 2 micron filter element available for the stock filter housing. I wasn't aware of this. What do they come with from the factory ? (2 micron I presume ?) What is everyone running (2 micron, I presume) Then why are there discussions on this and other boards about running 2 micron dual filter systems in an attempt to save the common rail pump on the Gen 3 engines ?
If this is old news, please forgive me. I am an ISB newbie.
Service Interval
ISB engines in Dodge trucks are not equipped to operate with the extended ISB service interval. The Chrysler ISB service interval is 7,500 miles [12,000 km] for the oil and oil filter, and 15,000 miles [24,000 km] for the fuel filter.
A new Raycor fuel filter element must be used with the Chrysler ISB application. Use the following chart to determine the correct fuel filter. The new 2 micron filter must be used on Chrysler ISB applications and is backwards compatible with pre-ISB Chrysler engines.
Filter Description Raycor Part No. Fleetguard Part No. Chrysler Part No.
Current B Series 7 micron Filter R33FG01 FS19522 04883963AA
New ISB 2 micron Filter R33FG03 FS19528 04883963AB

I'm almost positive the stock fuel filter that comes with our truck, fleetguard fs19579, is 10 micron. I use a 5 micron nominal 9 absolute from Baldwin. Not sure what the absolute and nominal is on the fleetguard. Have not used a 2 micron for our trucks, but I think they are out there.

This is confusing me. There seems to be conflicting info on which fuel filter we should be using on the 3rd gen engines.
This site: http://www.cumminsnorthwest.com/Cummins/DodgeParts.asp
Shows the FS19579 is for the 2000-2002 trucks and FS19598 for the 2003 Up truck.
Geno's (http://www.genosgarage.com/CoastalDa...ectGroup_ID=13)
Shows the FS19579 is for the 2000 and up trucks and the FS19598 is for the 97-99 trucks.
So, anymore thoughts on what we're supposed to be using? If the FS19598 is a 2um filter and the FS19579 is a 10um filter, seems we ought to be using the FS19598. I'm a little upset because my last filter I bought from Geno's and it was a 19579 because that is what they recommended.

OK, if you go to the fleetguard website and enter FS19598 at this place:
http://www.fleetguard.com/fleet/en/c...p?SMSESSION=NO
You can see a picture of the filter. There is no way with that big plastic "lip" on the top of this element that it is going to fit in my 2004's fuel filter canister. Is this really what the Chrysler fuel filters look like? It sure wasn't what the original filter I pulled out on my first fuel filter change looked like.
Any thoughts?

I don't know. I usually like to look into things a bit and understand what I'm getting, but in this case I'm finding conflicting information. I went to the local Cummins shop about an hr or so ago and they show the FS19579 is the fuel filter recommended for the HPCR ISB's in the Dodge application. They had a FS19598 and it has the same large "lip" as shown in the picture at the Fleetguard site. I don't see how it could possibly fit.

I don't think it does. I think the 2 micron filters were for a different canister. (12V).
There is a post in General Diesel entitled "Nice 2 micron Cat filter" that might be helpful to you if you want 2 micron filtering.

the fs1928 is superceded by the fs19598 (1997-1999)
the filter for a dodge pickup is a fs19579 from 2000 to 06
it replaces the 1261 and the 1268, both of which were simply filters...the fs19579 is a water separator/ filter...thats why it turns black... I cant seem to find the micron rating, but i know its not a stratapore, but i will call my Fleetguard rep tomorrow and see exactly what it says...

this is what ive found on quichserve...looks like they are more concerned with the new stuff about water getting in there rather then actual particles!
ooops sorry i dont think you guys can access QuickServe?
shoot...i cant cut and paste outa quickserve...
they say the replaced the 10 micron FILTER with a 30 micron WAter separatoe/filter, becasue the water was doing more damage tehn the particles!! So beware of a 2 micron FILTER...may not be separationg out the water!

I believe the spec is 5 micron for the currrent filter (fs19579).
I would add a primary fuel filter water seperator , with either a 10 micron or 30 micron filter. Any filter will let contaminates through if you run it too long or it gets too much water in it. Racor uses a media called "Aquabloc" to cause water to drop off the outside of the filter to the bottom where it can be drained, but they don't make a filter for the 03 and up.
Water is the biggest killer of the CR fuel system, but the system need a 5 micron filter as a maximum, because of such close tolorences in the injectors.

Guys, In colder weather you will have fuel shortage problems if you run less than 6 microns. This is hard on the already deficient lift pump which will stress your CP3 high pressure pump. Use lots of additive in winter to emulsify the water....the crap will stick to the water. Make sure you use an additive that kills algae in the warmer temps. When it warms up go to 5 or 7 micron. I use a 10 micron and replace frequently. Injectors don't fail because of 9 micron dirt...CP3'$$$$ and Lift Pump$$ do fail because of low fuel for lubrication. ks
