Seems like a lot to me, but the suervice manager showed it to me, that 1 quart per 1000 miles was within acceptable limits!!!! I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it for myslelf, but it's true.

Mine is burning/losing more than that though, and it's being sprayed to the undercarriage, we'll see what they find.

Cummins allows more then that before they will consider a warranty claim for oil consumption, something like 2 quarts in 500 is the point they get concerned.

Call Cummins, They say 1 qt. in 400 miles, you will have to give them your engine number on the drivers side valve cover.

and even if they do warranty your engine, you will just get a cummins "remanufactured" engine, not a new one. my trucks original engine never used a drop of oil. my reman motor uses about a gallon in 1500 miles.....

Snowmanx,

Big difference between "burning" a quart and "leaking" a quart. If it is spraying all over the undercarraige it seems like a clear warrantee problem. Burning it, although disappointing, might not be. But if it's getting steadily worse it might get to their limit soon.

My 1st gen leaked from the rear main like a big dog, but once that was fixed, consumption was insignificant. My third gen gets an oil change every ten thousand miles and it has never used a quart between changes. Now at 173,000 miles.

I'd be worried if it suddenly began using a lot and I'd get much better about checking it often. I almost burned up my old D-50 pickup because it very suddenly went from about 2500 miles/quart to 400 miles/quart. Something failed inside and oil burning went way up. Probably a valve seal or something in its case.

My 06 will use half a quart in 8000 miles, and thats with about half that mileage towing 8000 lbs, if I used the amount of oil you are, I would be wondering and checking where its going, doesnt seem normal to me.

I hate to say it and jinx myself, but I have never had this issue either. 118,xxx miles never had to give it more after an oil change has occurred.

I have over 298,000 miles on mine and never add any oil between oil changes. The oil is changed between 6-12,000. It is used for towing all of the time.
