06 Ticking noise in mornings??

Does anyone why know what would cause my 06 w/43K to tick in the mornings before it warms up?? Has been doing it for a while (3k?) and was wondering if it is something i should be worried about. Also what would cause the belt to whine/squeel in the cold mornings? Thanks for your input!

First off if you really worried remove the edge and take it to the dealer. My truck ticks alot more when its cold, the colder it is the worse it is. So maybe its a little colder, maybe you are just paying more attention to it, or maybe their is a problem. I got nothing else good luck. Ryan.

I hear ticking in a friends truck and I think its because he has almost 20k miles and has not replaced the fuel filter.

Im guessing that ticking = fuel system but not sure what kind of a problem it is?

There is a ticking noise that is created on some trucks due to the positioning of the CP3. The CP3 works just like an airplane engine, firing in a circular motion. If the compression events of the CP3 are not in sync with a ignition/power stroke of the engine, it can cause a ticking noise. However, this noise is usually always constant, no matter the temp.

You may have a rocker that is slightly out of adjustment. Sometimes on these engines they are sent from the factory on the loose side of the acceptable range, and before the rocker adjustment is recommended (100k), one or two rockers can sometimes be a little too loose. Your noise could be caused by the rocker making a little noise when cold, then when the engine warms up and the metals expand, all sounds good.

And the worst case senario, you could have a failing injector/injectors. They can cause a minor tick when the injector nozzle is plugged in one or two orfices and shooting fuel against the cylinder wall or piston ring land. This is a little different sound than the CP3 or the rocker noise, but can sound like metal lightly tapping against metal. This is the early stage of injector failures, and could eventually lead to a stuck open injector (horrid fuel knock), or even worse, a burnt cylinder.

I would check your valve lash (rocker adjustment), and if all checks out take out your Edge box and send it to the dealer. They may have some other reasoning for it that I am overlooking. However, dont let them give you the run around that your just hearing things, or that they cannot duplicate the problem. You drive the truck, you know what sounds right. Minor ticks and noises that are addressed imediately are alot better than letting them grow to bigger problems.

Hope this helps

It's normal to hear some slight ticking when you first fire it up in the morning. It is purging the air out of the system is what I have been told. To me that would be bad on the injectors... I notice it on my truck when it is cold outside and the grid heater is on.

Mine has always ticked slightly, but seems to be getting worse (now w/43K on it). It also seems to blow a bit of blue smoke upon startup (not for very long at all) which i haven't really noticed that much of before either. Could this be an injector?? I need to change the fuel filter too, could this have anything to do with it? Thanks!

If it is time for a new fuel filter, change it. Normal for a little smoke when you first fire it up.

Cold fuel, cold engine, cold parts...

Needs to warm up a little...

Sound like fuel lines?

Diesels make all kinds of noise - different from truck to truck.

Its nothing...

Well I doubt it is the injectors making the ticking noise. Mine has done it since new. I recently had all 6 injectors replaced and it still does it. The tech also lashed the valves when he changed injectors. The air purge thing makes sense to me.

Changed fuel filter today, will see if that makes any difference. Mine just started doing it lately, at least to the point of where i notice it. I have an F-650 w/cummins and doesn't make the noise, neither does my buddies 06?

i've been around, driven, and helped wrench on Detroit 6.2L, GM 6.5, Original 7.3L PowerJoke, 2nd Gen PowerJoke, and my truck. They all tick when it is about 25 and colder out or so it seems.
I have always been told it is the lifters / valve train before oil is brought up to the top of the engine to quite the ticking down...the ticking is due to the cold metal and lack of oil...ticking usually goes away within the first 1~3 minutes of startup.
Some of the older diesels would tick for several minutes after startup because they would not build oil pressure (not a good sign) unlike todays newer diesel with high output oil pumps that cool pistons, operate injectors, cool and lube turbo's etc. etc.
