It might not come out if it is in a bind, try driving the truck in a straight line and turn the **** and see if it will come out.

There is a reset, get out the manual, it tells you how to do a reset. If it's in a bind, do what GOBrian said ^^^^^.

Driving in reverse for 300ft or so will help take tension off of the chain in the transfer case... Trick alot of us pullers have to do because of how tight the drivetrain gets with the front and rear axles locked.

This may(ok will) sound weird but my 06 did exactly the same thing a few months after I bough it. It took the dealer a couple days to figure it out and when I called to ask abought it they told me they had replaced a sensor in the AC system. I was like I left it there because the 4x4 was locked in and wouldent come out no matter what I did. They said ya we know but the problem was a AC sensor issue. I asked them on what planet the AC was tied into the 4X4 and they said that all the systems on the 06 and newer trucks talk on a BUS system and when the AC sensor went out it sent out a signal that was identical to what the 4x4 **** sends when you have it in 4x4. I dont know exactly what sensor it was but its under the front pasanger side of th truck cause thats where he went when he put the new one in.

Man that story stinks... I don't trust any mechanics , well I trust one, but the rest are crooks. Probably had a loose wire, he clipped it on then said he had to replace something that isn't very visible without tearing into the dash.

They replaced the sensor. I know and trust the mechanic that worked on it. I went to school to be a mechanic myself 13 years ago but got a job making more money as a machinist so never persued the mechanic thing. The guy working on my truck was one of the guys I graduated with. They replaced the sensor but never pluged it in and had me drive it for a couple days(with no AC) to be sure they had the isue fixed then I came back in and he crawled under the nose of the truck and pluged it in and so far so good 2 years later. These BUS systems can cause weird isues if something goes wacky.

Cool, as long as you know the guy.... I've had mechanics say they replaced parts but didn't, break parts and try to say they were like that....

Ever see that expose' report where they put hidden cameras on cars and take them to dozens of repair shops? Something like 90% of them are crooked. If you find a mechanic you can trust, treat him like a brother and never leave him.

it most likely is your four wheel drive transcoder motor, which is mounted on your transfer case. take a hammer and lightly tap the motor and it should work long enough to get you back into 2 wheel drive. the same thing just happen to me but mine was stuck in 2 wheel drive. there are two electrical plugs and three bolts holding it on. it was pretty easy to change. hope this helps. good luck

... good reason to get a truck with a manual transfer case lever.
I just checked the shop manual, didn't see anything on a reset, there is about 365 pages of different tests with schematics etc.

My friend is a Ford mechanic, I stopped in to see him once, he was under an Explorer on the hoist beating on the little motor that engages the transfer case while a guy in the truck was moving the switch, that's when I made the decision not to get the switch on the dash...

I've never seen or heard of a reset but there is a pin hole sized neutral switch, maybe that's what people are thinking of.

I gave up manual levers in 1998.
