'06 3500 4x4 U Joint issue
I am needing to replace the u joints on my 2 piece driveshaft. I noticed that a lot of people on here are using the Neapco 2-0054's(for auto trans). These cross reference to the Napa 330's I believe. I called a driveline specialty shop here in Austin to see what they had in stock. I was told that these were NOT the correct u joint for these trucks although some people do use them. I was told these are for the 1410 series driveshaft and that I had a 1415 series shaft. He told me that it actually took a Neapco 3-0415. I asked him about the 0054's and he said "Yes they probably would work" but that he did not recommend using them as the cap diameter is several thousandths smaller than the 0415's. I could not find a cross reference for these u joints. He said I would either have to go with the Neapco's or get them from the dealer.
I looked on the U-Joint store website and they list the 2-0054's for my truck.
Have any of you had issues with the 0054's or the Spicer 5-801x's(HD version of the 0054's)? I can get these locally but the 0415's are out of stock.
I did a search and did not find any info on the 0415 u joints but I found plenty on the 0054's and 330's.
thanks
Dave

i would check the price to rebuild your current drive shaft, 3 joints and a carrier bearing. Then compare it to the 1 piece drive shaft, you may be surprised that its not much more and it gets rid of the carrier bearing which can cause issues.

2006Mega,
I am interested in getting the 1 piece shaft in the future. The problem was I needed to get the truck on the road asap. I wound up calling the U-Joint store and talked to the owner. He verified that my driveshaft does in fact take the neapco 3-0415's as I was originally told. He said he had instead been using the neapco 2-0054's or the spicer 5-801x's ever since Dodge started using AAM for the driveline. He said he has had no issues in doing so even though they have a slightly smaller cap size. I purchased the spicers yesterday in Austin for around $36 each. I installed them on the shaft yesterday and they seem to fit just fine. They pressed in with some resistance so I think they will be tight enough. I will install the shaft in the truck this evening and give it a test run to see.
