Question 05 CTD Getting louder...

Hi there! I am new registered user.. Been reading for quite a while. Came over from the Ford camp after a rather rediculous experience with an 04 6.0l ...

Anyways, was wondering if somebody could give me a little help.. My Cummins has a tick over 7000 on the clock.. No problems thus far.. Runs great!

However, the last week or so the thing has seemed alot louder.. Inside and outside. I can't go so far as to say it's "knocking" . Just seems very loud to me (compared to when new) .. The current oil (Shell Rotella-T) has 2000 miles on it so far. Hasn't towed a trailer in about 1500 miles and that was just towing our 4k boat. Nothing big.

Any ideas? It seems to smoke a little more on startup than it used to.. Doesn't do it excessively but does smoke more than normal. Even when the outside temp is around 80* it still smokes the first time I fire it up that day.

thanks for the help!

Chad

I know what you mean. My neighbor just brought home an 05' 2500 LWB 4WD and that thing was way quieter than my truck with 3500 miles. When new, the wife and kids couldn't believe how quiet this truck was. Seems louder now (idle) than when new. Also, I've got a tick in front of the motor when cold that goes away in 3-4 minutes. Do these things get louder?

I know exactly what you guys mean, I have 10K on mine now, been looking around, (thinking of going to a 6 speed) & noticed the brand new ones are somewhat quieter, I remember when I listened to mine when it was new & saying how quiet it was. I guess it's just due to break in

My Friends 05 is whole lot louder now then new. Everything getting set in on engine, rings and compression etc. My 03 has definitely gotten louder since day I drove off lot. Sounds like a piece of machinery in front yard.
You'll like that dodge more then the powerjoke!

Its just broken in now ! Now you can see how it really pulls. These trucks are not half ton road trucks , they are built with work in mind . pulling 15000 to 20000 pds. and it is a tractor trailor and tractor engine.

Mine began and is the same way. Picked it up Feb. 3rd and now she sounds more like a diesel after some towing and miles. Now, ready to bomb.

Mine is louder also. I noticed some soot on the rear bumper for the first time also. (about 7500 miles). I then checked my air filter since I was installing a new Pro-Guard 7 filter. It (stock) looked dirty so glad replacing it. But new filter has given it a little bit more SOTP feeling and longer marks on the road. So I know it is working. But still sounds loud. No complaints here though with the sound.

Yeah I hear ya.. I have towed heavy with it.. Towed my 32' Toy hauler at about 1500 miles on a 800 mile round trip.. Does perfect.. As expected! Power is great and it doesn't leave me on the side of the road like the ford.. Thank god!

Anyways, the noise just doesn't seem right. Not a knock but does seem like a tick.. Stays there even when its all the way warmed up. Tried setting the juice to level 0 (stock) and the noise stays. Maybe my oil is just getting old.. Has 2k on this oil.. I could be wrong. I have read a couple of threads about some injector problems so maybe just being overly worried about nothing since my experiences with the powerjoke..

Anyways, I love the truck.. Love the torque.. All in all very happy. Any ideas on the tick?

Btw, I have been running PowerService (silver bottle) since I drove it off the lot with 9 miles on the clock.

Thanks!

I have 16000 on mine. It has a tick tick sound at startup then goes away after a minute. This truck is not my daily driver, it only gets run on the weeekends so it sit for 5 or 6 days. I used to run powerservice every tank but with some research I've switched to Schaeffers. It has gotten louder but probably because of my mods, can't remember what stock sounds like!

So whats the deal with Power Service.. Some peopl say use the grey bottle (kleen) and others say silver..

Eddy just said he uses a 1:1 mix of PS/Silver with MMO.. I've seen that very from 8:1 to 4:1 to 1:1 now....

I pulled the edge off and it sounds the same to me. Put it back on quickly since I can't stand the truck stock now..
