Re:'03 Heavy Duty vs Light Duty

The older ld2500 used a flange axel in the rear with 8 lugs. The hd versions has the floating rear hubs.
Rammer, How can you be a Noobie, you must be a "Sleeping Oldie" if you are Member #50. 2003 HD have American Axle, 2002 had Dana Axles. Trucks made for US and Canada are designated as HD if they are 2500 and 3500 Ram. Trucks sold in Mexico could be 1500 and designated HD or even Muy Grande, MG. Shore is easy to add Heavy Duty Badges to the tailgate and replace 1500 Badges with 2500 Badges. Adding a new Badge to mine when it arrives.

Re:'03 Heavy Duty vs Light Duty

Well, if there are LD 2500s, more than likely you will find the 1500's Semi floating rear axles and IFS front suspension on the 4x4s while the Heavy Duty versions have Straight front and rear axles that are Full Floating.

As for the Dodge full size suv's. I saw one with Mexico licence plates in a Texas mall when I first got here and I just had to stop and check it out. It was a 2 door Gen 2 body style. It looked like dodge took a Standard cab long bed frame and put a club cab body on it, then added a Durango/Caravan tail end to it and sold it. I can't recall the name of it or the model year, but I believe it had the push/pull type light switch which I believe is pre 1998

It may have been called "Montezuma's Revenge".

Re:'03 Heavy Duty vs Light Duty

I remember seeing toyota pickups that said "1 ton" on their tailgates.
So 1 ton trucks mean different things to different manufactures. I know my 1 ton duelly carries more than 2000 lbs.
Maybe the 1 ton rating of the toyota's is it's gross vehicle weight rating
That would be pretty "gross"

Don't know about the US but the one ton Toyota trucks we had in South Africa would carry a true ton, even if they looked like a diminutive 1/2 ton.

Mexstan,

My Bro-in-Law bought a Toyleta 1 ton. As regional supervisor for a convience store chain, he had to transfer brew from one store to another on weekends. He would fill the it up to the top of the bedrails with brew and head for another store. Fortunately his delta region, don't know how well it would have toted the load in these foothills up 6 & 7% grades, not too swift I presume.

Re:'03 Heavy Duty vs Light Duty

No doubt about it, the Toyota's can carry a big load. As for carrying them up a grade, well that is not that bad, but you do have to change down a few gears which of course slows you down. I have on numerous occasions (in Swaziland) towed a broken down 5 ton loaded truck on dirt roads with with my 2WD one ton Toyota. Not fast of course, but it got the truck to the shop OK.
